How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have been having the business two years before the transfers. It has not been doing well because it has been my family's main source of income. Every household need has always depended on the business and this is why it has not been doing well. I have always used my business resources for my family needs. I was feeling like my business would collapse because of the burden it had. This is why I have been using transfers to boost the business on a monthly basis. I am, glad the business has grown from street to a rented premise for the business which has also impacted positively on my profits.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal in the next four months is to buy building materials for building my own house. Currently, I do not have a house at home and anytime I go home, I have to spend at a friend's house which has been very shameful for me. I feel it is time I have my own house so that I do not have to rely on others.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on boosting my cloth business by adding more stock to the business. This will increase my stock which will increase my profit. The rest of the transfer I used to clear the first term's fees arrears for my son so that he may not be sent home for fees anymore.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my life is different from how it was in that I have been able to take care of my needs easily. The best part is being able to boost my business and pay school fees for my children every time I get the transfer. I used to depend so much on my husband when the sales were low but this could not help much since he could go without a job as times because he is a casual laborer whose job is unreliable.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal is to build a spacious house that fits my family well back at home. The current one is small. I will love to see my family enjoy the new house that will even accommodate more things.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been operating a shop for over three years. We have always depended on the profits from the business because my husband is a casual laborer whose job is unreliable. Most of the time the secondary and primary needs have been catered using the profits from the shop. When I got the money, I decided to boost my business which a larger portion of the amount. This has been really helping us. I can only thank GiveDirectly for this support. I also paid school fees for my children since they were almost doing exams and my husband did not have money at that time.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I was running a business previously but it wasn't doing well. I was unable to bring a variety of goods for my customers which made most of them go to my competitors. Through GD I was able to restock the business and currently, I have managed to open a new branch. I have tried contacting my old customers and I believe with time I will be earning huge profits.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I do not have a house in my rural home which is so embarrassing and worrying at the same time. I have been a laughing stock for some time now about this since most of my peers who are jobless have families and well-furnished houses. People wonder what I have been doing in the city all this time. I therefore, have a new goal of ensuring that my business does well then later use the money to construct a house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I added stock to my business with part of the recent transfer. My shop has been doing well but I need to add a variety of goods in order to satisfy my customer needs. I also wanted to attract new ones by bringing items that were not in the market at that particular time. Apart from that I also paid school fees for my children. School fees have always been my biggest worry. Paying all the fee arrears at ones makes me feel relieved. I can now concentrate on other projects knowing that the biggest expense that would at times deprive me enough sleep had already been catered for.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
to improve my business further snd build a house in my matrimonial home in Kuria, Migori county
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my business is now doing well. I received money that I was able to put into my business. My business has improved a lot.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfers to expand my business. I have owned a retail shop in my neighborhood since last year, 2018, in the month of February. I stock commodities such as sugar, tea leaves and cooking flour. My business got to a point where it was not doing well because my needs superseded the profit I was making from the shop. It became difficult to run it as I never made enough money to even restock the business. My husband is unemployed so we both focused on the business which was almost closing down. I was grateful for the support I received from Give Directly as I was able to add stock to my business, to pay school fees for my children and also to purchase some household items and meals in my house. My business is now slowly picking up and doing better than it was doing.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I received the transfers early in the morning at 6:00 AM when I was still asleep. I did not have sugar for break fast on that morning when I first received my transfers. I was woken up by the message tone in my phone. I checked my phone and it was the message from Give Directly. I was very happy in my heart and the first thing I did was to head to the shop and buy my family sugar for breakfast.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have opted to expand my business by adding stuff in the shop. I own a small shop of selling various items and through this i will be able to grow my social status and also help me meet my children's needs comfortably. With this money invested in my business, it will grow through profits that will be generated. I will save the profits and top with part of this money so that i can build my house upcountry. I will also pay school fees for my children since they are my investment who i hope will push me ahead by helping me in the future.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is my family well being especially the present condition of my husband because he is a dangerous drankard and whenever he comes home we have no peace, the house is unbearable that am forced to sleep outside most of the times. I fear for what will happen every time he comes home drunk.
What are your greatest ambitions?
In life i have always wished to be comfortable and well respected by people in whichever capacity either as a business person or otherwise. This was driven by the desire of seeing my family in better living standards, my children to receive the best of education the world can offer.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
When i woke up in the morning, i get my children ready for school, cook them breakfast and escort them to school then return home to carry out my morning house chores. Since my shop is part of my house, i open it up and start off the business as i wait for evening to prepare dinner. Most of my life i cannot say i have free time. But whenever i am free, i always go to my chama meetings
