How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After utilizing the second transfer as to how I had planned, it happened that it was not sufficient since I had underestimated the value of some items thus I was not able to accomplish my goal. If I get money anytime from now my priority is to finalize building the roof of my house since that is what was left from the second transfer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is a unique and considerate organization whose working strategies cannot be compared to any other organization. The act of giving money to us without restrictions has enabled many of us to settle things that we thought we could not. I was able to buy a piece of land using the first transfer, something that I did not see it coming in my life due to poverty.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, the priority was to construct a house on my plot which I bought using the first transfer. The reason for building the house is that my family and I have been ling at my grandmother’s residence for a while since I had no means of buying our piece of land. I bought 20 bags of cement for KES 14000.00, and 24 pieces of iron sheets for KES 24000.00. Thereafter, I started the construction process and what is left is the roofing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy when I received the money because I had things that I was planning and I wanted to do but I did not have the money. I wanted to have my own plot of land where we would live with my family and quit living on my husband's ancestral home because of the frequent family wrangles and land disputes. Therefore, getting this money was like an answer from God. I am so grateful.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is the much freedom and control I now have over the affairs of our family. I now own a plot of land that no one can limit or restrict me, in as far as investing and using the land is concerned. This makes me so happy and proud. I have even planted some coconut trees already that my children and I would be able to depend on in the future. We would be able to sell some coconuts and address some of the financial challenges that we would face.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my recent transfer on buying a plot of land that cost a total of KES330000. This is what I had always wanted because living on the ancestral land of my husband' had been very troublesome. There was no freedom even to plant trees that would benefit our children in the future because everything was communally owned and operated. I could not even keep livestock because there would be endless disputes with the other family members over the grazing areas. Therefore, buying ourselves a plot of land was a very huge relief to me.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving money means land ownership to my household. Currently am living in family land. My husband does not own the land. Am planning to use the entire transfer to buy 4 acres of land. I have been to this land for over four years own. Something that ashamed me because my children have no land to inherit. But now am a happy person knowing that soon I will own land.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because I use this time to rest after a long day of doing household chores. Resting usually gives me the feeling of happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial Crisis is the biggest challenge that I have ever faced in my life. I am a housewife and my husband is doing casual labor of tapping palm wine. He earns little of $100 per month. This amount only caters to the basic needs of the family. Therefore we lack the capital to purchase our land.
