Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home with my fellow villagers sitting and discussing political issues with my neighbours without checking my phone. I heard a message alert on my phone. I could not readily check the messages since I could not comprehend the contents of the message, I waited for my helper who checked later on and confirmed to me that I had received the first transfer, I was greatly overjoyed because, through the transfer, I could now fulfil my needs with ease.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Due to the hard financial times that we are currently facing, I decided to invest my transfer in a butchery business with my son. I have been a subsistence farmer but it's been two years now without adequate rain to do farming. My desire was to start an income-generating activity that would at least help me to effectively meet my financial needs. I partnered with my son and we purchased the necessary equipment required like a fridge and rented a premise in town. I believe once this business thrives, I will be getting a good income which I can use to invest in other avenues for financial security.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been relying on subsistence farming which has ensured food security in my household for years. I was not incurring much cost on foodstuffs because I was getting plenty from my farm. However, the prolonged drought has made it impossible for us to engage in farming for almost two years now. I am currently spending a lot on buying foodstuffs at high prices and yet I do not have a source of income to depend on. I had to think of doing an investment that could ensure I get a regular income to sustain myself. When I received the money, I partnered with my son and invested the whole of the transfer in a butchery business. We acquired a business premise and paid for the rent. I am happy that once this business picks up, I will be able to effectively fulfil my basic needs with ease.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The only way a family can have a stable income is when they involve themselves in multiple businesses. I have been having a desire to own a kiosk in this village since our trading Center is far from here. If I succeed to have my transfer, I will definitely open a store where I will be selling food items and utensils. A capital of 60000KES is enough to initiate the project. This will by end of day earn us like 500KES.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My first born got a baby girl, whom I named after me as it has been my long time wish. Am very happy and glad that I have seen my grand child.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been having a skin condition which cause a very irritating feeling. If you look at my skin, it's very rough. I can not sleep a whole night sometimes especially during hot weather. During the day is even worse. I can not get good treatment because it's very expensive.
