How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
To become financially stable and able to take care of my family, I want to start a business selling silver cyprinid and smoked meat. This will offer alternative sources of income and make it easier to meet all my family's needs. Without these transfers my family and I would be struggling so much but I am glad this is not the case. I am very appreciative of the financial support from Give Directly; it has been of great help to me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
During the month of October, my residence collapsed, necessitating my family to endure several days in the cold. I allocated $34 towards constructing a new dwelling to provide shelter for my family. Although the construction of the house is not yet complete, I am grateful that we now have a new place to call home. Additionally, I procured food amounting to $13 to ensure my family's sustenance. I engage in the sale of building poles and charcoal, with occasional periods of no sales. The funds from the transfers have been instrumental in mitigating this situation. Furthermore, I made an investment of $56 in acquiring livestock, which includes a goat, nine goats, and three ducks. As they multiply in the upcoming months, I plan to sell some of them and utilize the proceeds to address my family's needs. I deeply appreciate the financial support that has been instrumental during these challenging economic circumstances.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My foremost objective is to expedite the construction of my new home, aiming to alleviate the challenges posed by inclement weather conditions. Additionally, I aspire to launch a modest kiosk venture to enhance my earnings, thereby enabling me to address many of the needs currently beyond my means due to my limited income. I'm enthusiastic about the financial support I am presently receiving, which is contributing to these aspirations.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Last June, my home crumbled, forcing me to endure the harsh elements of rain and scorching heat in a makeshift shelter. However, there is a silver lining as I've initiated the construction of a new dwelling - a roomy, two-bedroom house capable of accommodating my spouse and six children. Using $24 from my August income, I secured sturdy building poles essential for the structure's stability. I'm elated that the completion of the house is on the horizon, promising us a fresh start. In addition to this, with the remaining funds, I managed to partially settle a school fee debt of $36 for my two primary school-going children. This ensured their uninterrupted education for the term, and I'm relieved to report that they successfully resumed their studies. I'm profoundly grateful for the financial assistance provided through these transfers, as it has enabled me to achieve far more than my usual income source, selling charcoal, would have allowed. Given the meager profit margins, my daily expenses would have remained a considerable challenge without this support.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Living in a pathetic condition has always been a great concern to me. As I receive my monthly transfers for this year, I hope to accomplish the goal of building a new house. It will save me from extreme cold conditions during rainy seasons. A situation that is always costly for me in terms of seeking medication. Once I succeed in this, I also hope to begin a livestock-selling business, it is quite rewarding during festive seasons.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been living in an old house that is in a dilapidated state. Because of its outdated roof, whenever I am inside, I always feel like my entire family, is in an open place. Because I am constantly unable to raise money for my family, it has remained in that situation for a long time. To raise some money, I always fetch and sell firewood. Because my wife does the same casual job, she does not have a consistent source of income. Therefore, I spent $34 from my recent transfer on three iron sheets because I want to build a new house. Nonetheless, my prior transfers had also assisted in covering my six school-age children's tuition and food expenses. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the financial support.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My tiny house, which was home to my wife and six children, collapsed last week. All of the members of my family were accommodated by my mother. I'm currently sleeping in an improvised goat skin and polythene shelter. My current financial situation is poor because I make a pitiful living selling building poles. Every penny I make goes toward feeding the family and covering the children' tuition. I've done my best to save, but every time I do, a financial emergency forces me to spend what I've saved. My top priority for this year is to use a significant amount of my transfers to construct a sizable, luxurious home for my family. The financial boost will be extremely beneficial.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
During the beginning of last month I experienced a tragedy when my house collapsed after heavy rainfall. I was lucky enough not to be in the house with my family at the time but unfortunately this meant that we were homeless. Therefore my wife and I have been sleeping outside this entire time while my kids went to live with their grandma. That is why this time around when I received the transfers I ended up spending KES 1,500 in purchasing timber because I am in the process of gradually building up my home. Afterwards I proceeded to spend KES 1,200 on nutrition by buying six packets of maize flour because there was barely any food in the house. As for what I remained with which was a balance of KES 700 I ended up spending it on paying for tuition for two of my kids who are in school and kept being sent home.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Although I own a house, it is small and in disrepair. It leaks whenever it rains and cannot accommodate my family members comfortably. This has necessitated my desire to construct a new house. I decided to spend my transfer money on building materials as soon as I received it. For example, I spent the entire KES 3,000 on purchasing five iron sheets in preparation for the building activity. I intend to build a new house as soon as I have sufficient materials.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing a great through the donations the change I see back in the village is clearly visible. People are not starving as they used to anymore. It would also have probably taken me quite a long time before I could start saving for the purposes of renovating my house. I have yet to heat or see any negative consequences from being involved with the organisation.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Last month the roof to my house collapsed but luckily no one was inside the house at the time. It was a grass thatched house, which got easily destroyed. So when I received the funds I put KES 1,500 in my savings account so that I could let the money accumulate and then once it was enough I would renovate my house. I was left with about KES 1,500 and I went ahead and took KES 1,000 and used to buy timber for the purpose of building the house when the time came. The remaining KES 500 I bought three packets of maize flour for KES 435 and used the remaining balance to buy sardines.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very excited about receiving my transfer. It was around 9 AM, I was sealing some holes on water storage jerricans when I heard a message alert on my phone. I ran to my helper, and they confirmed Give Directly had sent the promised funds. It was a miracle that sent celebrations across the village.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have not realized a big difference in my life following the transfer. Despite receiving the cash, my children and I have starved for two days within the last month. I feel the first transfer was not sufficient to clear school fees and provide enough food for us. However, I hope future transfers will eventually eradicate the meal deficiency dilemma in my house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Having three children out of school for almost two days, I deducted KES 600 from the transfer to clear the outstanding arrears and they happily resumed studies. After meeting their education needs, I purchased maize flour worth KES 350 to enable us enjoy daily meals. I saved the remaining amount for financial emergencies.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been struggling to feed my family. This is attributed to by the fact that I fully rely on subsistence farming to feed my family. A slight change in the weather patterns leading to zero harvests means my family will have nothing to eat. Of late, the farming seasons have been unpredictable and I have come to realise the secret is to till a large piece of land. To affect this, I am planning to spend 30,000KES to buy two cows and an ox-plough for subsidence farming. This will ensure that I till 8 acres of land each season translating to twelve 90kg bags of maize. With 12 bags of maize, my family of eight will have enough food for an entire year. I will further use 50,000KES to buy two indigenous dairy cows for milk production both for domestic use and for sale. The dues from the sale of milk will help in catering for my children education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Getting enrolled to the GiveDirectly program has brought joy in my life. I was a hopeless man before and this is because I had nothing to feed my family with but with the introduction of this program, I hope things will change soon.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the biggest challenge I am facing right now. I feel like I have failed as the breadwinner in this family of eight. Imagine we can go for six consecutive days eating one meal a day and this has consequently affected our health. Moreover, we only consume one variety that is maize meal and silver cyprinid.
