How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After achieving the priority goals that I had in life, I do not have any new goals at the moment. I just want to focus on boosting the livestock rearing that I started with the transfers. The plan is to make sure it stabilizes and becomes a sustainable source of livelihood for me.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In your opinion, Givedirectly did well in helping the less fortunate households in the community. The non-refundable cash transfer aid has changed the lives of many poor households in our area. I thank the organization and pray that it will continue to assist and impact the lives of many as it did to us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the recent transfer boosting the livestock rearing that I started with the first transfer. I used $90 on purchasing 3 more goats to add to my flock. This is a future investment and a reliable source of income that will offer support whenever I face any financial challenge. Previously, I was depending on charcoal vending which was very tedious and earned me $1.5 per day which was not enough to support basic needs like food making my family go to bed on empty stomach 2 days a week. In addition, I spent $50 to purchase proper and nice clothes for myself since I was wearing old and torn ones that make me feel uncomfortable whenever I attended a community gathering. Furthermore, I spent $110 to purchase modern bedding for my lastborn son who was spending his nights on the floor. Finally, I used the remaining amount to purchase sufficient food and some household items like cooking pots, plates and buckets.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was just relaxing with my grandchildren at around 4 PM when I heard the phone ringing very loudly. I was curious and requested my daughter-in-law who is also my helper to check what the notification was all about. I was overwhelmed with happiness to hear that they were from Segovia Technology. I finally knew that I will fulfil my heart's desires with ease.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers, I was able to acquire livestock( a dairy cow and goats). This has always been my wish to own it but I wouldn't afford it because of the high cost of living. I choose to purchase them because the goats reproduce very fast which is evident that I will have many of them within a short period. Once they multiply, I will no longer strain to meet my daily basics like before. I have been depending on the charcoal business which was not profitable at all. Being a widow of three it has been that easy. Therefore shortly, I plan to sell some of the goats and sort out all my family's needs. Also with the cow, once it starts producing milk, I will start selling and pay school fees for my grandchildren. Through this investment, I do believe that my life will never be the same again.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first cash transfer on purchasing a dairy cow worthy of KES 25000 and two goats at KES 7000. I have been dreaming of them for years but I couldn't afford either of them. I am certain that they will thrive so well since the climate in my region is so favourable. Also, I bought a new bed and a mattress for a total of KES 12000. For years, I have been using the traditional beds which I never experienced any comfort. Later on, I bought iron sheets to renovate my house which was leaking. With the remaining cash, I had to buy food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was left here 10 years ago after my husband died. I have been raising my children alone using charcoal business. Recently, my house went down because it was too old. Used some of my savings and also help of my children to put up a new one bedroom house. It is not yet complete as you can see, I need a door and also bed and mattress. By doing that, it will have reduced most of my problems because I have been sleeping on the ground for quite some time now. Because of my age and doing charcoal business is becoming more stressful for me, I plan to use most of my transfer to buy food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Am really happy I managed to put up this one bedroom house after my house collapsed in. I was shocked because I didn't know where I would sleep in case rains comes but with this shelter, am feeling very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Charcoal business here in this area is the major source of income if not the only one especially for us who never went to school. This kind of job only works well for people who are still energetic because it involves carrying heavy logs. Considering my age, it has become a very big challenge but because I have no one who I can fully say I depend am still finding myself in the bush looking for logs to make charcoal.
