How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Prior to receiving the funds I planned on using the money to an renovate my house especially my roofing since the iron sheets were quite old and worn out and apart from that I was wanted to invest a bit more when you came to some farm animals.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly was definitely a great help to me, especially since it gave me an instant push into saving the amount that I needed to build my house and to finally own the land that I want that and for that I am grateful and I have no complaints whatsoever.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
About some few months back before getting enrolled into the program I happened to buy a piece of land for my family and myself. This is because I wanted to build my family home and I was at the moment I was still living in my ancestral home. I had already purchased the piece of land but was I had failed short on KES 15,000 which I ended using this transfers to finally settle the debt and own the land. As for the rest of the money, I put it in my savings account because I wanted to let it accumulate over time so that eventually when I take it out I can finally build my house at once.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4pm and I was at home relaxing with my wife when I received the text message confirming that I had received the money from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and my wife was as well happy because the plans that we had been having all along were going to be fulfilled. These plans, which were to repair my motorcycle and start up a fish frying and selling business, could not be fulfilled before because my job as a motorcycle taxi driver hardly raised enough money and the little I could get mostly catered for my family's daily immediate needs as well as with help from my wife who used to own a small grocery. Therefore, I was so happy I received the money because my dreams could come true.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is that I was able to start the fish frying and selling business which I had the plan on starting it up but could not due to lack of sufficient capital to start and sustain it. It was like a miracle from God because such a thing is not just so possible or easy to get. I am so happy that I do not depend on one source of income and it makes me feel less pressure in providing for my family. I am no longer worried about not having made enough money from my job as a motorcycle taxi driver and there is no need to incur any debts especially for food for my family, all thanks to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 18000 on starting up a fish frying and selling business which my wife would be incharge of and add to her small grocery. I decided on this because I had the plan all along but I did not have much of an ability to fulfill it because my job as a motorcycle taxi driver hardly raised enough money and the little I could make on a daily basis mostly catered for my family's daily immediate needs. My wife who owns a small grocery used to give me a hand in providing for our family. I am so happy that this business is our reliable and regular source of income as well as complements my job as a motorcycle taxi driver which subsequently takes away the pressure of providing for my family. My neighbors in our village especially my colleagues in this motorcycle taxi business who mostly operate till late in the night, are not worried about not getting their daily meals companions when others shops and outlets are closed. I am so proud and happy that I am not depending on only one source of income which makes me have less pressure and not worried about maybe having an unproductive day in my job as a motorcycle taxi driver, all thanks to GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Building a permanent house for my family and having an extra source of income are my two priorities when I receive this money. I have a mud walled house which stresses me because of the frequent repairs needed. I have a little money that I have saved from my motorcycle taxi business which I will top up KES 30,000 and start the construction of a stone walled house. For the extra source of income, I plan to buy a donkey for transportation purposes; both personal and commercial. This will earn me money within the village. Transportation of tents during functions, water, building materials among other goods will earn me some income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The December holidays were a great joy to me. It was celebration after celebration. One of my friends who owed me some money finally paid me right on time for the festivities. I really had no plans for celebration before that. I bought a duck and food stuff and invited some of my family members so that we could share a meal as we ended the year. We had such a good time.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Limited income for my family is what is bringing about the challenges that I am currently facing. I am a motorcycle taxi rider while my spouse does not have any job. My wish has always been to educate her so that he can at least have a skill like hairdressing so that he can support me. On average I earn as little as KES 300 in a day. With no support from my spouse, It sometimes becomes difficult to satisfy her needs and that of my daughter.
