How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the upcoming year, I have set my sights on marriage, as I believe I am now at a stage in life where I am ready to establish a family. The decision to take this step is rooted in my sense of readiness and capability. Subsequently, I am planning to open a small grocery shop in close proximity to my residence. The rationale behind this venture is the strategic location near a frequented road, providing easy access for people passing by. This ensures convenience for potential customers who may want to purchase fresh vegetables, aligning with my aspiration to contribute to the community while sustaining my livelihood.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has successfully fulfilled its mission, greatly benefiting me by providing the necessary support to renovate my mother's house and construct my own dwelling. This accomplishment has significantly improved my living conditions, leading to a comfortable life. The impact of this assistance motivates me to encourage the organization to continue enhancing the lives of others. Grateful for the positive change, I express my thanks and appreciation.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving my recent funds, I allocated $430 to refurbish my mother's residence and initiate the construction of my own house. Before the transfer, I resided in my mother's dwelling, but with the newfound resources, I opted to establish my own space, though it remains unfinished because some of my construction materials had been stole. Recognizing the inadequate state of my mother's house, I prioritized its improvement before departing. Additionally, I utilized $40 for sustenance, as my earnings from casual labor, often amounting to $5, proved insufficient to cover my expenses. To address my clothing needs, I spent $30 on new attire. The remaining funds were dedicated to agricultural activities. Gratitude to GiveDirectly for facilitating these positive changes in my life.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was out for my evening walk around 6 p.m. when I overheard my neighbors excitedly talking about how they had just received their first transfer from GiveDirectly. I couldn't help but feel a rush of anticipation and hope. When I got home, I anxiously checked my phone to see if I had received the money too. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the message confirming the funds had been deposited into my account. A wave of happiness washed over me, and I couldn't stop smiling. It was like a ray of sunshine breaking through the clouds, a lifeline when I needed it most. I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the generosity that would now help me build a better future for myself and my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I'm delighted to share how my life has taken a turn for the better since receiving assistance from GiveDirectly. Before, I struggled to put food on the table, but now, I have enough to eat and no longer go to bed hungry. The most significant change is having a house of my own, which has brought me freedom and privacy I never had before. This newfound independence and stability have filled me with happiness and gratitude.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to live in my brother's house, and it wasn't easy. I didn't have much freedom or privacy, and I wanted a place of my own. When I received the cash transfer from GiveDirectly, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with it. I decided to build my own house. With $280, I managed to construct a simple but cozy home, including all the labor charges and building materials. It was hard work, but the feeling of independence and having a place I could truly call my own was worth every bit of effort.
In addition to building my house, I also spent $20 of the cash transfer to buy some farm tools like pangas and jembes. These tools have been a game-changer for me in terms of farming. With my own house and these tools, I now have the freedom to work on my land, grow my crops, and secure my future. The best part is that I still have some money left from the cash transfer that I've saved for future needs. I can't express how happy I am to have my own house, newfound freedom, and the tools to make a better life for myself. Thanks to GiveDirectly, my life has taken a turn for the better, and I'm excited for what the future holds.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My house collapsed 6 months ago and it made me homeless. By then, our area was receiving heavy rainfall and it was a big challenge to me on how I will survive the cold season. This pushed me to occupy my mother's house because she had traveled. Currently, the backlash I am receiving from the community is overwhelming, and I feel the shame of lacking a house as a man. My plan once I receive this money is to ensure the problem of housing is solved. I intend to spend a big portion of the transfers ($600) on this project. This will help me avoid the shame I have had with my fellow villagers. On the other hand, I will spend the remaining amount on the business of vending vegetables. I will operate this work within our village. To make this success, I intend to construct a kiosk where I will be working in. Hence, improving my social status is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The fact that I never get a chance to be away from home means I have enough time to engage myself in farm work. Fortunately, this has been a season of heavy rainfall and I took the challenge to work hard on my 0.5-acre piece of land. Currently, the maize are doing well and I am expecting to solve the hunger problem in my household. Hence, this is what has brought happiness to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The boredom of staying alone at home is basically what has robbed away my joy. This is because my family members stay away from the village. Since I am single, I lack someone whom I can share stories with especially during the evening hours. This has pushed me into feeling desperate, a situation that can expose me to depression. Being alone also has rendered me seeking job outside home because of the worry about theft. Therefore, the lack of a partner has made my life so difficult.
