Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I am a debt free person after clearing the huge debt burden. I feel happy and more composed in that I have money to buy food and basic necessities. Prior to receiving this transfer, I had a debt that had accumulated. We were on the verge of losing our plot of land that had been attached as collateral.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The money was sent at night while I was asleep. However, the next morning I woke up to loud shouts of joy from the community. And that is when I rushed to check my account. I was very happy and relieved because GiveDirectly had rescued my family.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent the first cash transfer to pay off a loan worth UGX 500000. I purchased cement worth UGX 171500 and sand worth UGX 60000. I bought a television set worth UGX 200000 and a solar panel worth UGX 200000. I paid the builder UGX 120000. I spent UGX 60000 on gifts to my parents. I also bought a solar battery whose price I cannot estimate. The balance was spent on buying food and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means paying the lease amount for San acre of land that I had leased out. I will drain ownership of it and cultivate crops that will enhance my livelihood through food production.
In case of any balance, I will renovate the semi permanent house that I stay in on order to make it conducive for us to stay in. Currently, it leaks when it rains.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is after lunch.I am happy at this time because it is the time when I am resting and I share stories with other neighbours within the village. That engagement makes me forget of my daily struggle and improves on my social life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face is inadequate land in order to cultivate in. The land we cultivate in us hired and what belonged to us was leased out due to failure to at a loan that we had got in order to start up a business. We are spending a lot of money in order to secure where to cultivate but it is not sustainable.
