How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would like to boost my business from its current worth of kes. 50000 to bigger and better booming business. I would also like to build my house to completion and do its finishing well. The house windows still are not fixed. I believe that by saving little by little I will be able to do it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your support. Indeed, I do not have anything to complain about. I lacked a house now I am a house owner courtesy of GiveDirectly. At least now I own a house and only finishing is remaining.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the first and second transfers, I received from GiveDirectly, I managed to build my house. This is after I had saved the money to buy bricks, cement, and other building materials. I managed to build a 3-bedroom house to completion. I am a father to three years old sons. My wife is a colonist while I am selling clothes, and doing house construction. Before I started receiving the money, I used to live in a single mud-thatched house and it was old. Thank you so much GiveDirectly, at least I am able to live in a good house unlike before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was the happiest person in one of the September 2021 mornings when I received transfer message from GiveDirectly at around 8.30am. Since birth, I hadn’t received such amount of money hence had no reason to celebrate. Sincerely speaking the celebration continues up to date because that was an act I had never seen and I will never forget.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life that is vividly seen is the house. Dreaming of owning such a house hadn’t crossed my sleep even on a single night, only for GiveDirectly to do it for me. I am very thankful for this far the organization has taken me and this act has been registered at the bottom of my heart and I will live to talking of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My house was falling apart and I had no means of renovating it. When I received the money I decided to construct a permanent interlocking block house and do away with the muddy house. The materials and the block work expenditure was KES 47000.00. Thereafter I was remaining with a balance of KES 7700.00. I didn’t want to use this amount in the roofing materials since it wasn’t enough. I opted to save this amount for my family needs trusting that I will receive the second transfer so that I complete the remaining part of the house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means owning my own business. I do casual jobs of constructing houses nearby our village of which I earn 300 Kenya Shillings a day .This is not enough to cater for my family's needs as a sole breadwinner. I plan to use 30,000 Kenya shillings to start business of selling food stuffs because this project works well in our area due to drought. I also plan to use 50,000 Kenya Shillings to construct a permanent spacious house for me and my children for this is what I dreamt for a long time. My current house is small given that my family is growing bigger.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I and my family wake up healthy. This makes me happy because I get that chance to go for casual jobs to feed my family. When they are healthy, I get peace of mind.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced is lack of finances to support my family. As a casual worker the work that I do is not predictable I can take up to a week without getting a job and as a breadwinner to the family it becomes difficult to manage giving my family good life as they deserve. I struggle putting food on my table and satisfying other needs.
