How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different from how it was in that I am no longer stressed like I used to be before I started receiving these transfers. As a widow, I had various needs to take care of. The main burden was paying school fees for my bright children who were in high school. The money really helped me to offset their fee balance. Today when they go to school I feel at peace because I paid school fees for the whole year. When they come back for their holidays, I am also not worried because I have enough food that I planted using the transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, what I liked most about this organization is that they were able to teach us everything in the Barasa first before they gave us the money. We were able to ask questions and they answered everything. The best part of it is that the money was also unconditional and no bribes were involved.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a large portion of my transfer on paying school fees for my two children in high school. I had sold animals and land in order to make sure that they were never sent home due to lack of school fees. This money came as a big relief for me. As a widow, I could not have managed to offset the school fee at once, maybe they could have dropped out of school by now. My children are bright and I would never want to let them down. The money from the government was not enough to carter for their education, however, I appreciate the little help that I was given over a period of time. I also bought farm inputs like hybrid seeds and fertilizer. I am proud of harvesting 15 bags of maize which was not possible before. Without using fertilizer, I could only get four bags of maize that I could end up selling in order to take care of the various responsibilities that occurred from time to time. I finally used the remaining amount on buying clothes for my children and I.
