How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I currently have a plan that I am committed to seeing through. My land is near the trading center, and my plan is to construct rental units there. After learning that this year's grade six and grade eight pupils will be taking their national examinations to enter junior and senior secondary schools, respectively, I came up with this plan. After careful consideration, I realized these students would need accommodations. I am hopeful that my investment in rental properties will be profitable because I live close to the secondary schools. By March 2023, I intend to reach my goal by taking out a loan from the bank where I have been saving money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build a better house and even invest in different projects of their choice. This enabled them to improve their living standard. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well. What I can recommend is that, as you conduct your location scouting in an area, kindly reconsider the families with difficulties in taking their children to secondary schools as well as universities and if possible offer them some scholarships. I am proposing this because once you educate the children they will be the source of eradicating poverty in the families.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a business lady, I was very grateful to get the second transfer of $550. When I received this money, I first withdrew it from my M-Pesa account and deposited it into my bank account knowing that it will earn some profit. Thereafter, I withdrew it bit by bit to boost my stationery business. In addition to that, I am very happy because it enabled me to expand the stationary business to open a uniform shop where students can get not only books related items but also school uniforms. Having these two kinds of businesses is a huge achievement on my side because I can provide for my family without straining like before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy attending to my customer at my tailoring accessory shop when I got the funds from give directly. This brought me so much excitement because my husband and I needed to expand our businesses to increase our income and thereby improve our lives. I immediately shared the great news with my husband through a text. and the following day we went ahead to execute our plans.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
After investing the whole transfer in our businesses (tailoring accessory store and bookshop), we now have a 60% increase in our monthly profits where we would earn KES 20000 monthly. Now we have plans to open more businesses so we can improve our financial status and thereby enable us to raise and sufficiently provide for our child.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am married with one child. To fend for our family's needs, my husband and I collaboratively work at ensuring our businesses (a bookshop and a tailoring accessory store) are a success. Our monthly returns are KES 20000. To create some financial independence, when I got my transfer, I used it all to expand my them. This has proven to be fruitful as the profit margin has now increased by 60%.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My husband and I run a stationery business. Recently, we added uniforms for sale to our business. These transfers are timely because we had been wondering where we can get a lumpsum amount and add stock to our business. We shall use all that money to stock up our shop. We are ecstatic about it and we hope for better returns.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My entire family is in good health. We do not take that for granted. We enjoy the warmth that love brings and everyone in the compound has each other's interests at heart.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The demand for quality stationery is low. Our business does not get as much traffic as we want because the community cannot afford our products. I could think of starting an electronics business but the capital required is high and also the demand would not be high.
