How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next year, I hope to complete constructing the kitchen for my family of 4. I am currently in the course of completing the main 2 roomed house and hopefully begin the kitchen construction immediately since I also have the material at hand. In addition, I am planning on venturing into the carpentry business by opening up a workshop at the centre. I believe this will be a smooth transition because I already have a power saw machine and I will only have to purchase trees to convert to timber. I will not have to borrow money again to support my family of 4 as I will gladly utilize the profits from this business.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
With Givedirectly, lives have changed immensely. People have constructed houses, bought livestock and paid school fees for their children. I am excited that no school-going child is seen at home while their peers are in school. When a child is educated, the whole nation prospers! I am yet to witness this shortly, courtesy of Givedirectly. constructed livestock bought Assisting people is good
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When the family land was divided 6months ago, I had to shift to my portion and thus abandon the house we used to live in. Life started afresh as I had to construct another house to accommodate my family of 4. I am happy that the transfers came in handy as I used $340 to put up a 2 roomed structure that we live in currently with my family. In addition, I used $30 to clear school fees for my children for the whole year and now I am not worried about them being sent out of school. For the rest of the transfers, I saved to construct a kitchen as well as purchase trees to continue with my power sawing business that my family depends on.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was enjoying a cup of tea when I got the text at exactly 4:24 pm. Upon checking what the text entailed, I realized that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I was elated with joy knowing it was an assurance I will achieve the goals I had set. I shared the news with my wife and she was equally happy. We had plans of purchasing a dairy cow and seats. It was a relief to us knowing we will get to do as planned.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life now is seeing my children look neat, clean, and dressed in decent clothing. That melts my heart. They are mostly happy and excited. This makes me feel content, especially for those milestones I've achieved. I've been able to save cash seeing that I no longer buy milk.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I work at a barber shop on the market day and other days I'm working on my farm. I'm married with two children. Upon receipt of my transfer, I spent $280 on buying a dairy cow to cut the costs of buying milk that was expensive. We use about 2 litres a day and it sells at $1. Previously, I couldn't afford to buy milk because I don't have a stable income. I spent an additional $80 on the purchase of seats that I didn't have and the remaining amount I spent on the purchase of food and clothes. To own a dairy cow is the best thing that's happened to me and I'm grateful for the cash gift that's made me achieve a lot of significance.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
We have plans to invest this money in livestock keeping. The land that we were carrying out maize production has been lying empty and it is about time we changed our farming activities. This will supplement our income as well as cater for our milk needs. We would also like to spend this money building a 2 roomed house to enable us have enough space to accommodate the whole family. The one we currently have is a bit small and we were worried that once our children are grown up we wouldn't live in dignity.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There haven't been much events in my life lately because I have been occupied so much with casual jobs but I am so happy that my family is healthy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge that we are facing today in my family is food insecurity. This has been occasioned by failure of maize farming in our region due to changes in climatic conditions over the recent past. This farming venture had been our source of food as well as livelihood for the longest time and when it failed we were left to depend on casual jobs to earn a living. This meant a reduction in food portions for the family and reduced income. The gap that was left by the venture is so big and casual jobs will never bridge it.
