How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I have a goal of buying a motorcycle that I will use to transport charcoal to the market for sale. My husband is currently jobless. Buying this motorcycle will not only make him, self-employed but also will provide a cheaper option in my business to transport charcoal to the market. This will guarantee me more profit and use the money to take care of my daily needs (buying food).
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I would like to commend Give Directly for their help in giving us the unconditional transfers. The transfer has changed my life for the better and I am now back on my feet financially and able to take care of my family. I would also urge the organization, if possible, dig up wells in our area to ease the burden of walking long distances in such of water.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30000 to buy a secondhand motorcycle that I used to transport charcoal to the market. Because of buying the motorcycle, my husband is self-employed since he is the one who takes the charcoal over to the market. When I am not at work, he uses it to ferry passengers from one place to another and gets paid for it. Besides buying the motorcycle, I spent KES 1000 to start a charcoal selling business. I previously sold charcoal at my home by the roadside because of the limited stock I had. I was making little profit, which was not enough to feed my entire family (Husband and 2 children). At that time, I was the only breadwinner because my husband was jobless. Now that I buy the sacks in bulk and sell in the market, I have attracted wider customer base and thus I have multiplied my profit and can now take care of my family well. I then spent the remaining amount to pay fee balances for my two children who are in secondary school. I am glad that as a result they sat for their end of term examinations and continued with their education with no interruption.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still remember just like the other day, I had retired to bed at was around 10 PM when I got a message notifications on my cellphone. I decided to check who had sent the message at that particular time since it was so unusual. I was shocked and excited at the same time. It was from Segovia Technology, I had received my forst transfers finally. I decided to share the splendid news with all my family members who at first thought that I was kidding. This was one of the memorable nights for us and we could hardly sleep due to the excitement.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now have a business ( selling fish) that I can rely on at any time. For so many years, I have always dreamed and wanted to start a business but I did not have enough capital to start with. I have been jobless for the past five years ad we have been depending on my spouse who solely relies on the off jobs with low wages. It has been tough all along because both my two children were in secondary schools. Raising the fees and meeting their basic needs was one of the main challenges. Therefore had to think of a permanent solution that would bring all the problems to the end. I am glad the business is doing well with good returns. In a day making an average profit of KES 100. I have now been able to cater to my family's daily needs more comfortably without having to strain like before. Also, I do believe through the business I will be able to achieve a lot and start some other projects like starting a retail shop which has been my dream.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge portion of my first transfer on paying school fees for my two children who are both in secondary schools. I had to prioritize this since it has been the main challenge that I have been experiencing ever since they joined the school. They have been on and off due to the huge fees balances that had accumulated. Also, I had to settle a debt of KES 19000 from microfinance that I had borrowed a few months ago. I am glad that I now have peace of mind since I had no idea where I would acquire the required money. To add to that, I bought beddings like a new bed and a mattress for a total of KES 9000. In addition, I started a new business of selling fried fish in the nearby town and I am so glad that I now have a stable job which is so lucrative. Finally, I bought new clothes for my children for the Christmas celebrations and sufficient food as well.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My current source of income is charcoal business because the rains have been gone for long. I have not been able to maximize profits because of transportation expenses. I will therefore use KES 30,000 of the transfers to purchase a second hand motorcycle that my husband will be operating so as to reduce the transport cost. I also have two children in secondary school who needs school fees for the next term amounting to KES 25,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The last six months have been very tough. The only thing that brought me joy was reuniting with my two children for their holidays in the month October after them being away for sometime. I live with my husband who is always on and off working. Having my children around always brings me happiness. I bought one packet of wheat flour and made them their best meal so that we could enjoy as a family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Getting a meal for the day is just by luck during this famine. I cannot remember the last time I had three meals in a day. I used to depend on produce from my farm to sustain me and even get surplus to sell and pay school fees for my children. That is now a thing of the past because this drought has lasted for almost 3 years.
