How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Learning from my current financial struggles, I am determined to provide my children with the best education possible, ensuring they have a bright future ahead. With this goal in mind, I intend to use the money from my upcoming transfers to pay for their school fees. I believe that investing in their education is crucial for their future success. In the future, when they secure jobs, I hope they will also support me financially, especially as I grow older. I am very grateful for the financial support I have received, as without it, I wouldn't be able to keep my children in school. I am truly thankful for this financial assistance.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am focused on providing my children with the best education possible. Currently, I have three children enrolled in school. Two are attending secondary school in Mariakani, while the youngest is in Mutulu primary. As a casual laborer, I've faced challenges in paying school fees for my children due to the difficulties in finding consistent work. Typically, I'm hired to clear bushes for people, particularly when the rainy season approaches. However, these jobs are scarce, and the pay is insufficient to meet my family's needs, especially when it comes to school fees. That's why I decided to use my entire transfer of $102 to pay for my children's school fees. It brings me great peace to see all of them attending school and continuing their education without any obstacles. I am extremely grateful for the financial support from the transfers, as it is helping me achieve my goal of educating my children.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current goal is to continue supporting the education of my three children. I am confident that through their education facilitated by the cash transfers, they will have better opportunities in the future, potentially securing jobs to support our family and alleviate our financial struggles. One of my children is set to join high school next year, and I aim to be financially prepared for the associated expenses, including admission fees, which can be quite expensive. I hope that the cash transfers will play a significant role in helping my son enroll and settle well in school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I prioritize my three children's education whenever I receive cash transfers. Their school fees are mostly a significant concern, as they must be cleared to prevent my children from being sent out of school. Accumulating debts and balances at school is something I have always wished to avoid. However this has been challenging since I rely on casual jobs in house construction, and these jobs are often scarce. Thus, when I receive the cash transfers, I allocate $20 towards their school fees. Food is also a concern in my household, so the remaining transfer is used to purchase food. Honestly, the cash transfers have been instrumental in keeping my children in school, leading to improvements in their education. I am so grateful.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With the forthcoming maize harvest from our farm, my family anticipates an abundance of food in the coming days, alleviating the need to purchase food from shops daily. Consequently, I will utilize the monthly stipend to cover my children's school fees and make investments in livestock. As the livestock multiply over time, I can generate income to meet my future needs and continue funding my children's education in the years ahead.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
A significant portion of my July transfers was allocated to covering school fees for my son, who is currently attending secondary school. Unfortunately, two days before receiving the transfers, he was sent back home due to an outstanding school fee debt. As a result, he had to miss essential lessons during this period. The situation was challenging for me to handle since I am currently without a paying job. My livelihood involves raising livestock and practicing subsistence farming during the rainy season. Fortunately, the money from the transfers proved to be incredibly vital in enabling my son to return to school and continue his education. Alongside the school fees, I also utilized the remaining funds to purchase food for my family of five back home. Occasionally, my elder sons assist me in buying food, but this help is not consistent. Hence, the financial support from these transfers is immensely valuable, and I am truly grateful for it.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Owning goats! The low income I make from charcoal burning can barely fulfill all my family's basic needs such as food and education for my three children. Keeping goats is the best income stream alternative that I believe will help me raise money to meet the household expenses. Currently, I own approximately ten goats. I still consider this to be a low number if I were to achieve financial stability. Therefore, whenever I get the opportunity, I will buy more goats to expand the herd and boost my wealth.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I usually spend most of my cash transfers to pay tuition fees for my three children (one in high school and the others in primary school). This is because my charcoal-making job, which earns me around $35 per month, can hardly meet any need beyond food. Besides, with the rising commodity prices, sometimes my income is also never enough to put regular meals on the table. So, I am grateful that the financial assistance supplements my earnings and allow me to support the education of my children. I spent $30 from each of the three recent transfers to settle the unpaid fee balance so that my children would study without interruptions. Gladly, they have remained in class to date. I used the remaining $4 to fulfill other household expenses like buying water and more food.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am a livestock keeper, and I do not have any additional source of income except GiveDirectly's transfer. When I began receiving my monthly support, my primary goal is always to channel all my transfers toward school fees. I have three school-going children, my daughter Lucy and two sons, Silas and Sikubali. For the coming year, I shall prioritize their education. I am glad that they progress well with their studies. They like their studies and are positive in life. Without the transfer, the situation would have been out of hand, and I think they would have dropped out of school.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After I realized that I had finally received the transfers, I felt such a huge relief especially because I had a couple of debts that I needed to settle concerning my children's tuition. At first I decided to spend KES 1,400 by purchasing six packets of maize flour and green grams for the purposes of nutrition for my family due to consequence of drought. I then proceeded to spend the balance of KES 2,000 on the tuition of three of my kids since two were in primary school and then one was still in high school.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The funds that we have been receiving from the organization have impacted our lives in the most positive way possible. We could hardly imagine it was possible but we are indeed grateful because the donations we receive have helped us tremendously and in my opinion the organization could do no wrong because my children get to remain in school and have a meal unlike before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since I just recently received the transfers, I failed to get the opportunity to withdraw the funds since I have been quite ill but I am grateful that I am now better. But as soon as I withdraw the funds, my immediate consideration would be to pay KES 2,000 for my daughters tuition because I have a debt that I have not yet settled. Afterwards I will use the balance that will remain which is KES 1,000 and ensure that I sort our nutrition for myself and my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was getting ready to go to my workplace when a friend called me. He shared the good news that he had received his first transfer. I became very anxious. Immediately he hung up, I checked my phone to see whether I had received my transfer . I was surprised when I found the text that I had received my first transfer. I shared the good news with my wife. We all were happy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I feel sad when I cannot pay school fees for my children. This has demoralized them to some extent and affected them in their studies. I am grateful that the biggest difference that transfer has made in my life is to help me pay school fee balances from children so that they continue with their education.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My wife and I are casual laborers earning income through the sale of charcoal. The business is on a downward trajectory for the past three months caused by a low demand by the consumers. The harsh economic times we currently are in is another contributing factor since most of our clients are opting to use alternative sources of fuels that are cheaper. Having been unable to make any sales in the last few months, I have often bought food on credit and talked to the teachers to let my children continue their education, promising to pay once I get the money. When I received my first transfer, I spent KES 500 to clear part of a school fee debt my two children owed the school. Besides paying school fees for the children, I spent the remaining KES 700 on food for the family to prevent them from starving because I had no money to buy them food.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm a father of ten married to one, and out of the ten I'm still living with four under my care. In this village I'm just taking up odd jobs here and there to survive mostly slashing or fencing for other people, or maybe constructing a temporary structure for a pay. These are not those types of job that are so available and it's always a very wide time gap between one job to another. Among the four children in my house, one is suffering from autism while the remaining three are okay and in school. But now my needs have increased; one of my children have just finished his primary level of education and is suppose to proceed to high school. I know I wasn't going to afford this but with the GiveDirectly's support I now have hope I'll be able to do it.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was very happy last month when my son passed his national certification examination for primary so highly. Though it was a bitter sweet situation as I had to start figuring out how I'm going to afford his high school education amidst celebrating his success. My two eldest sons never went too far with education and so I have a lot of in this one and wouldn't wish to let him down as a parent.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
In the life of a peasant, challenges never cease and so I have dozens of those, even though they're all around draught and unreliable sources of income. It's been more than two years of draught meaning for all that time no traditional styles of farming has taken place when this is what we always do to get by. On the other hand, cost of living has also gone too high lately with essentials like water that we used to get for free are now being sold.
