How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My intended goals before receiving the transfer included building a better home for my family and I since the one we were living in at that moment was small and I was not content . I also wanted to cater for school arrears for children who are both in highschool at the moment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly enables people in the same financial situation as me to upgrade and improve their lifestyle,if proper planning of the cash transfers is done diligently. Therefore I would insist it keeps reaching out to people like me and give them an opportunity like the one I got to enhance even a little chance of growth in our communities and also to experience the joy I had when i managed to complete my house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the first transfer, I began the project of building a house with the help of my husband. When the second transfer finally came in we managed to continue with construction and finish up with our house where we bought cement, wood which cost me at least fifteen thousand kenyan shillings and the rooftop which cost me almost forty six thousand kenyan shillings since I bought forty iron sheets which were going for a thousand one hundred and fifty kenyan shillings each. In addition I also managed to cater for my children tuition which I managed to pay seven thousand kenyan shillings, although this just sorted half of their fees since in total I was required to pay twenty two thousand each per term.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 in the morning when I was at home taking breakfast together with my family when I heard a loud vibration from my mobile phone. I was a bit curious and asked one of my children to confirm who it could be. Upon checking, he realized that it was the long-awaited Mpesa message from GveDirectly. I felt so happy and even decided to share the good news with all my family members. We all started to celebrate and thank God for the precious gift.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that the cash transfers empowered me to build a permanent house. The previous one was in a critical l condition and very small in such a way that some of my family members (9) had to seek shelter elsewhere. My spouse has been depending on some odd jobs with very low income which in a good day, he could earn KES 500 which was too little for the basic household needs like, food, clothing, shelter, school fees, and medical expenses. Therefore this man's building a permanent house using my own money would take years. It is now a relief because I finally accomplished my dream. We are sleeping comfortably in a better shelter with all my children without having to worry about all sorts of stress that we underwent during those days. In addition to that this has even made my children improve on heor performance because they have ample space to study on their own at night which is very encouraging and motivating.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer on buying building materials which include twenty bags of cement at a total of KES 12600, and bricks at KES 10000, and pieces of iron sheet KES 9000. This was to construct a new plant modern hose to replace the initial one which was temporary and single-roomed. With my 9 family members, it could not accommodate us all and thereof some had ton shelter at their frnds house. In addition to that, I cleared school fees for my two children who are both in secondary school, and aid a total of KES 14000. I am glad they are no longer sent home now and then like before which was affecting their performance in general. With the remaining KES 9400, I purchased sufficient foodstuff like bags of maize flour, vegetables, beans, wheat flour. We are now taking at least two meals a day which was not possible at all.
