How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am now boasting of having cows in my homestead. I would have taken years to accumulate enough savings to buy them. Having them is saving for the future of my children's education. Additionally, I was able to hire labor services in preparation for my farm since I could not do any hard job due to my condition and neither did I have someone to help me. I have now gotten a good harvest like my fellow villagers. I am also in the process of constructing a spacious house to live in with my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What I love about GiveDirectly is their determination to enrol needy households and giving them freedom of choice to plan when they get their transfer. Also, the pieces of advice given on how I should spend my transfer to change my own life has been helpful to me. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a bigger portion of my first transfer to pay for my delivery expenses. I went through cesarian delivery which was costly. For sure, were it not for this financial support, I don't think I would have been able to clear these expenses. I had also begun to construct a new house but I lacked building materials. I took KES 5000 from my transfer and successfully purchased building poles and paid for the mason for his services. My new house will soon be complete which is more spacious than the previous one. I am finally spending the rest of the money to cater to my household's basic needs such as daily foodstuffs and other expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Through this money, I managed to purchase the things that I badly wanted by couldn't afford due to my low-income job. I managed to purchase a cow, which I am currently keeping in my homestead. I know with time, this cow will reproduce and increase in number with time. Through them, I will be able to educate my children. I was also in the process of building a house but I could not finish it due to limited resources. After receiving the money, I bought the remaining materials that were required and finished the construction process. To me accomplishing these goals makes me happy. To me, these are the biggest difference I have achieved so far.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received a message notification very early that morning. This was very unusual so I decided to check what it was all about. When I checked, I realized that it was from Give Directly. They had sent me to my Mpesa account. I was overwhelmed with joy with the news. I didn't expect the message at the time. I remember not going back to sleep. I kept tossing as I planned how I was going to use the money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I had begun constructing a new house since the one I was living in previously was in a bad state and was almost collapsing. I couldn't continue with my building project because I didn't have enough money to buy enough materials. I am happy and thankful to GiveDirectly because, through them, I was able to purchase the additional materials that were required to finish the building process. In addition to this, I also bought a cow for rearing. I believe it will reproduce and multiply with time. Apart from that, I also spent the money to cover my delivery expenses. I also did the shopping for my new baby using this money. I spent the rest of the amount to cater for my other household needs

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Owning a spacious house that is big enough to fit my family members and all my belongings under one roof has always been my greatest wish. However, this has not been possible due to lack of finance to expand my current house. At the moment, I have been forced to distribute most of my property in my in laws houses because my house is just too small. Painfully, since they are nor in my custody, they end up getting spoilt and I can not even claim for compensation for fear of conflict. With this money, I will build a spacious house and with the rest buy goats for rearing.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the afternoon when I am with my children once they return from school. After sharing lunch with them, we rest under our tree shade as they narrate to me what they had been taught. This really makes me happy because in an ironic way, they end up teaching me since I never got the chance to advance far in my education.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint is the biggest hardship that I face. Initially when I used to operate a small business of baking and selling doughnuts round the village, the situation was a bit manageable. Presently that is not the case since I am in my last trimester of pregnancy and I lack the strength to operate the business. Currently we have only my husband's income from harvesting coconut wine to rely on but it is hardly enough. So extreme is the situation such that even in my pregnant state, when food is little, I have to sacrifice my share in order for my children to eat and this affects me so much.
