How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I primarily depend on mixed farming to see my family through. I always struggle to improve it to earn better thus I inject every coin I earn into it. The biggest difference in my life since I received my transfer is the ease of meeting my family's daily basic needs that have been brought about by the poultry-keeping I restarted with part of my transfers. I currently have better egg production that I either sell or we consume in our family. I am happy that these egg sales support a merry go round I had joined as a saving plan. I am hopeful that I will soon have more money to invest in other income-generating activities.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I love how GD carried out its operation in our society. Everything was done in a transparent way and they were firm and fair on their decision. I thank them for the financial support and giving a chance to decide on our own how we wanted to spend the money. I urge them to continue that way.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Since I had invested in livestock farming, I knew I had to fence my compound to reduce conflicts and to improve my farming. I took KES39000 of my second transfer to facilitate the fencing of my farm. I bought a chain-link worth KES30000 and used KES9000 on labor to complete the fencing. Being a farmer, I took another KES3000 to buy ten hens to add to the one I had. I am happy that they have greatly improve my egg production. I wasn't feeling well when I received my second transfer thus I spent the reaming amount in my medication. I got well and thank GiveDirecatly for the financial support.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I used to buy milk from my neighbors and it was so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs in the village to earn an income. The income was so small and was only enough for the basic needs of the family. I could not get extra money to save to buy a cow. I talked with my neighbor at some point and he agreed to give me a dairy cow with a condition that in case of any emergency at his homestead he will sell the cow. My worries began when he came to took back his cow and I was back to the same state of buying milk. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew I would be in a position to buy my own dairy cow. Currently, I no longer buy milk. My family has enough milk and I sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet additional basic needs for the family and even pay school fees for my children in school. I am so happy because I own a Dairy cow which has always been my dream.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy when I received my first transfer. I remember it was early in the morning when I heard my neighbors celebrating. I asked one of them and he said that GiveDirectly has sent the money. I immediately checked my phone and to my surprise, I had also received 55000 KES from GiveDirectly. My spouse and children were so happy. We immediately budgeted for the money and the first idea that came into our minds was to buy a dairy cow.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer to buy a daily cow. I used to buy milk and it was so costly for me and this was an opportunity for me. I also started a poultry keeping project, I bought twenty hens for a start and the rest of the money I used it to buy clothes and food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Three years ago I borrowed a dairy cow from a friend of mine as a source of income for my family. I have since talked him into selling it to me upon receiving the first transfer to which he agreed. Receiving this money will therefore boost my esteem as a proud owner of a dairy cow, something I have aspired to do for a long time. With the remaining amount, I am planning to venture into poultry farming as a form of savings and source of income that will fend for my children's education in future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am a tailor and my job is at most days very demanding. This is a job that I wake up to and engage in throughout the day. I close my business in the evening between 6:00 and 7:00pm to go back to my wife and children who would be glad to see me bring food home. This is the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a tailor by occupation and the only one in the nearby shopping centre. Towards every school opening day I am overwhelmed by my community's demand for school uniform for their children. The constant hurdle that come with this job is having to shoulder people's debt who take uniform on credit due to their poverty and lack of money. This at often times make me run my business at a loss. This is the biggest hardship I've faced in my life but I believe this situation will change when we all receive money from GiveDirectly.
