How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Originally, my plan was to prioritize using my transfers on constructing a poultry structure. For years, I have been having a dream of doing poultry project in large scale. However, since bodaboda business seems more beneficial compared to poultry project, I changed my plan to buy a motorcycle for business. Although I could only acquire a second hand motorcycle, I am happy because I can always raise KES 300 from it on a daily basis. Nowadays, I find it easy to comfortably support my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well not only in supporting the most needy people in our society. In addition, the GD staffs are prompt in doing follow ups thus they can be able to learn of the major impact their support has in the community. There is no other NGO that had ever worked in the same way as GiveDirectly. In contrary, there is nothing that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 15,000 from my most recent transfer on purchasing a modern radio system. My radio got spoilt and I prioritize buying a new one to help me be updated with the current affairs, more so during this year of general election. Moreover, l bought solar system in order to get adequate source of lighting for my children during their studies. Previously, as a family we could use either lantern or candles after my D-light solar system broke down. Consequently, my children find it easy to concentrate in their studies.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 11 pm and I was asleep when I heard my phone ringing an indication that I had received an SMS. I became so happy after reading its contents and immediately informed my spouse about it and he was over the moon on hearing the good news and he promised that he would tender his resignation letter as we had agreed.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My family is still young as we have one child and as a family, we knew that as time goes by, we will get more children and responsibilities would increase. Because of this, we spent our first transfer to purchase a motorcycle that my spouse is currently using to offer taxi business in our locality. I am glad that this has transformed our lives for the better unlike before when he was working as a caretaker. Because of this, we've been able to start saving part of our daily income on merry go round group and also invested in poultry farming through buying some chicken. Due to this, I am foreseeing myself being self-reliant soon when this poultry farming picks up well and I will be able to help him settle some of our bills.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My spouse has been working in Elgeyo Marakwet as a caretaker to one of the rich men and he would come home after three months and he would only send money at the end of the month on the other months. This had been our source of livelihood and we had to manage the little he was getting. When GiveDirectly came for enrollment, we agreed that we would use our first transfer to acquire a motorcycle that he will use in offering taxi business after resigning. Upon receiving the case, we actualized our goal after purchasing a motorcycle worth KES 50000 and used the remaining KES 4700 on foodstuffs. I am glad that apart from earning daily from this business, we get to spend quality time as a family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better livelihood for my family. My husband and I both work as casual laborers. The work is unstable, we earn about KES 4000 a month which cannot sustain our family's needs including food. We own a small farm which we do not harvest much, therefore we purchase most foodstuff for the most part in a year costing us KES 5000 a month. With this money, I plan to construct a poultry farm to rear chickens. This will not only earn me an income but it will be one of my biggest achievements. I will be able to sell the chicken and the eggs as well as feed my family. This will cost me about KES 20,000. For the rest of the amount, I will purchase a dairy cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Three months ago, my husband got a job. Life has been a bit easy since then as he can send me some money every month. The last time he came, he bought some clothes for me and my one-year-old son which made me happy as I had not worn new cloth in a long time.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of finances is the biggest challenge. Being casual laborers, the work is unreliable. There are days we go unpaid or there is a shortage of work. My husband is paid per month, meaning we have to wait until the end month to earn income. By the time it is the end month, we have bought so many household needs on credit, we just payback and the cycle continues. We hardly save any money for other developments.
