How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am happy after spending the first and second transfers, the results are amazing, and even though I still have the task of ensuring that the projects succeed, I have an additional goal to see how to raise school fees for my son. He sat for his primary national examinations this year, and he performed well. He is yet to join the secondary school and the school fee is higher compared to what I was paying while he was in primary. I am planning to raise part of the fees with the income I earn from my business that I recently started with the first transfer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, it was a great move by Give Directly to ensure that everyone was well-informed about their program before they could give us the money. Thereafter, everyone was given the money directly without any discrimination. This showed transparency on their side. I do not have any complaints but congratulate them for the awesome work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Livestock rearing has been very helpful and the most common source of income in my household. I have always invested heavily in it and never regretted it. With the second transfer, I bought two cows at 40000 KES. They are beneficial in terms of milk provision and once they give birth I will have more of them. I have school-going children, and I am hopeful that in the future they will come in handy whenever faced with challenges to raising the fees. 14000 KES I have set aside for household foodstuffs. It has been of great help, especially with the current drought we are facing that has made food to be scarce.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can vividly remember I was awakened by the loud vibrations from my mobile phone at around 4 AM. This was so strange to me because I hardly receive messages at such hours. Therefore I was so curious and decided to check who it could be. Whatever I saw was beyond my expectations. I had finally received my first cash transfer as I had been guaranteed earlier during the enrolment time. I was extremely happy and I couldn't afford to sleep again. After hours later I informed all my family members in regards to the great news. We started planning on how best we would spend it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life of that I am now a proud owner of the livestock. This has been a long time to own at least one but this was not achievable because they were very expensive on the other hand, I was facing lots of hardships. I settled for the dairy cow because I will be getting plenty of liters for free. I am planning to sell the milk in the nearby dairy shops and the remaining liters will be for my family consumption. This will be a surplus to their daily meals. I am however planning to save the cash in my account. The money will specifically cater to my family's basic needs and pay school fees for my children on time. Being the family's breadwinner of nine, it has never been easy in making the ends meet. I feel there is a relief in my life because I am so sure that I will no longer be straining in fending for my family's basic needs. Also, I am certain that as days go by they will reproduce and I will have many of them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying livestock more so one dairy cow and three goats at a total of KES 19000. I have been yearning to own them for years but because of my financial difficulties, I couldn't afford them. Moreover, I cleared school fees arrears of KES 4000 for my four children who are still in primary schools. Their exams were due and I am so glad that the money came in good time. In addition to that, I bought iron sheets worthy of KES 10000, nails KES 3000, timber KES 4000, and the labor charges of KES 6000. I purchased all these to build a new house since the previous one was almost falling. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs and nice attires for my kids.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a spacious house to my household. This is because I am currently sharing a one-bedroom with my children which does not give me privacy. I am planning to spend KES 40,000 to build a two-bedroom house which is enough for a family of nine members. I will also use part of the second transfer to start a hawking business of selling household items as well as buy four indigenous goats which do well in our area due to the prolonged drought. The balance will help me to cater to other basic needs such as food and stationery for my kids.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month I received a food donation from a well-wisher who had come to our nearby township. I got 10kgs maize, 5kgs beans, and 2lts of cooking oil. This brought me joy and happiness because it reduced the pressure of spending money to buy food. The food lasted my household for a week and save around KES 2400 for other pressing domestic needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge that I am currently facing is a lack of regular income. My wife and I rely on charcoal production as the main economic activity. The job is energy-draining and due to insufficient big trees, it is hard to produce high-quality charcoal. In a month I earn KES 4000, while in a day I require KES 350 to spend on food and water for nine Members, hence can not sustain the whole family. Due to this, it has been a challenge to save enough money to construct a big house. Occasionally when I hist visitors, I have to seek help from neighbors to accommodate them which is embarrassing.
