How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had no stable source of income before this project as I depended on casual domestic jobs that were not assured. I would wake up every day, uncertain if I would find any job for the day and go to the neighbouring estate where I would sit somewhere, together with other jobless women and wait to be called by anyone who needed domestic help for the day. Due to the large number of women to choose from, it was very easy to go back home empty-handed to a family of hungry children and sometimes an angry landlord who never cared about anything but his rent. Since I started the butchery business that I now own, I have never failed to provide food for my children because however little I get sometimes, I have never gone back home empty-handed. I have also been able to pay my rent and my children's school fee on time through my new business.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I own a butchery business which I started using the transfers for better income. I have been running this business for close to a year now and I have seen the need to have a refrigerator to store the extra meat that is not sold in time to avoid wastage. This is the biggest goal I have right now which I hope that I will be able to achieve before the project ends because I know that it might be a bit tough raising the money to purchase the refrigerator from the business proceeds alone which is not quite stable yet.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used most of the money I received this month from Give Directly to boost my butchery business by adding more meat stock to ensure that my customers get whatever they need at all times. I then used the rest of the money to pay part of the school fees for my daughter in kindergarten.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now self-employed. Before receiving GiveDirectly's transfers I used to do casual jobs around like cleaning other people's clothes among others. From this, I used to earn KES 250 KES on a day I get it. Even though It could barely meet my family's daily needs, life was challenging since my resources were unreliable. Opening a butchery using the transfers is a great opportunity in my life since it has enabled me to meet my family's daily needs with ease and even get extra income to save. I am hopeful that I will soon have some money from this business to enable me to expand or start another new business.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I have no new goals at the moment but rather to ensure I capitalize on my business which I started with the transfer because the income I get from it enables me to provide for my four children myself since I am a single mother compared to the casual jobs the entailed cleaning for peoples around Eastliegh which come will a lot of demand with meager payments. Having this butcher business means a lot to me because it make my life easier and stress free.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my entire recent transfer to restock my business since I used GiveDirectly's transfer to started this business there is need to restock the business with these money to make it stable to enhance consistency and have quality products that would strengthen customer for a stable source of income inters of provision of daily needs such as foodstuff, rent, school fees and other household needs.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My small butchery business which I solely depend on for income was at the verge of collapsing before GD came to my rescue. All of my family needs are taken care of by this business, ranging from food to school fees to clothing and even medical expenses which strained it because a lot more was being taken out compared to what was coming in. These transfers have helped stabilize my business and saved it from collapsing which I think would have been the case if I had not received the money. I am currently a happier mother because my source of livelihood is at its best and my children are also well-taken care of.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I am a single mother of four and my life has always not been so easy having to provide for the kids on my own. My eldest child recently joined high school which made life even tougher because raising his school fees has forced me to tighten my budget even more. I have no new goals at the moment rather than just to ensure that my business is at its best and my son's school fees paid on time, therefore, my transfers will always be channelled towards the two.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a butchery which I run for my daily income which is where I invested all of my transfer for this month. The business provides money for my daily needs such as foodstuff, rent, clothes, school fees and other household needs. Because the business is not such a big one, the profits are usually not so much and the amount that I take out of it daily makes it so vulnerable. This is why I usually prefer to boost the business with my transfers to stabilize it and keep it afloat. Being consistent and having quality products strengthens my customer base which is what I am currently trying to build by offering the best I can to my customers.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
After receiving the transfer my focus became starting a business on my own. I have already I am planning to expand my butchery business. To make it bigger and hence increase proceeds.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I am now self-employed. Before receiving the transfers I used to to do casual jobs around cleaning other peoples clothes. From this, I used to earn KES 100 daily which was barely enough to meet my family needs. Opening the butchery using the transfers is a great opportunity for me, on a good day, the proceeds are over KES 1000. This has enabled me to meet my family's daily needs and even get extra to save. Receiving the transfers was a life-changing event.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent last months transfer of KES 5000 on expanding the butchery business that I started after receiving the transfer. I part of them to pay rent and the rest on increasing the stock of meat I had.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I was woken up to the good news through a message that came in at 5 am. The message was notifying me that I had received. I was excited and in disbelief since I did not expect to receive that money in the wee hours of the morning. With the same excitement, I woke up did the household chores as I waited for time to withdraw. The shops around here are not open by that time.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I find it of more importance to grow my butchery business then pay school fers for my children because its mandatory for them to get education and there after purchase food stuff in the house for them to be asuured of meals daily. My butchery business has not been doing well of late due to little stock. By increasing the stock, am guaranteed of more profit generation that will help me run errands in my daily living.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern daily sustainence especially food provision because I have children, and if they lack something to feed on life is unbearable. I cannot keep up with their cries and nags while I clearly know there is nothing I can do to help.
What are your greatest ambitions?
I have wished to be businesswoman because that is what I know suits me since I have no education achievements in life and without education nothing much can be achieved.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I wake up, take my breakfast, groom up then leave for the shop, to my butchery to begin my daily hustle. At arount 9:30pm, i close my business and return back home prepare supper then head to bed afterwards.During my free time if i have no place to go most of the time i stay indoors sleeping.
