How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Recently, I graduated as a mason from a local collage and I have started getting some local contracts to build houses for people in my neighbourhood. What I hoping to accomplish in the near future is establishing my brand to be able to get win big contracts. This will mean so much to me and my family as I will be able to pay school fees for my children and provide to them without much strain.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What GiveDirectly does well is inclusivity, when they came to the village, the enrolled everyone who had qualified to participate in the program without race or tribal discrimination. This show how you value community cohesion and development as a people who works together builds and empowers each other.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend the transfers to buy a mature Friesian cow which I'm looking forward to start milking in the near future. Before I started receiving the transfers, I was working as a casual in construction sites and I was earning an average of $3. With this meager daily wage, I was not able to do much of family developments as it was only enough for basic needs. When I received my first transfers of $550, I spend part of the transfers to pay school fees as I had joined a vocational training collage to better my building skills and also earn a certificate. After getting my second transfers, I thought it was a good idea to buy a Friesian cow so that my wife will be able to sell milk in the near future and we will be able to help each other with family responsibilities.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 am. I was checking my phone as usually. I didn't know there was a message from GiveDirectly. When I got the message indicating that I have received money from GiveDirectly I felt so happy. I reported at work and asked for the permission to go back home to plan with my family. My family felt so happy because we have never received such amount of money before. I knew I would be able to renovate my house to look decent. I went and withdrew the money the same day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Buying a heifer is the biggest difference in my daily life. I buy milk daily and it's so costly for me. I spent KES 80 per day. This is so much for me because I depend on casual jobs at the construction site. They amount of money that we are paid per day is so small. There are other basic household items that needs to be purchased. This means there was no money to save. It was a daily struggle for me. I had planned on purchasing a dairy cow but the challege was the money. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I felt so happy and decided to buy a heifer. When it reproduce in the next few months will be able to get enough milk for the family. I will be able to save the money that I would have used to buy milk for other basic household items. My children will get enough milk unlike now. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has given us hope. I am very sure that my tomorrow is much better. I look forward to seeing my children get all their needs. This will he the happiest days for me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 23,000 to buy a heifer. This was always my wish because I buy milk daily and it's so costly for me. I spent some amount on renovating my house to look decent. I bought building materials ready to build a better kitchen house for my family. I will start the construction process When I received the second transfer. I bought sofa set seats and the rest of the money I bought food and clothes. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a casual labourer working in construction sites. On a lucky day, I usually receive an average payment of KES 250. If you factor in the recurrent expenses, saving and accumulating a sizeable amount of money to buy an asset will take a very long time. Receiving this money means that I will have an adequate amount to buy a dairy cattle for KES 45000. Through a proper feeding program, I will in the long run have surplus milk to sell to my locals hence generating some source of income. I intend to also buy a second hand motorbike to start a business of carrying people and luggage within my county.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There has been numerous road construction in my area over the past 6 months initiated by the county government. This has been a blessing for me since I have been fortunate to be getting casual jobs there. This has ensured that there has been a regular flow of income.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a casual labourer at construction sites, the job is so demanding and tedious yet the pay is little. I usually get a daily payment of KES 250. After I factor in the daily recurrent expenditure (mostly food), I remain with little to save. With this remaining amount, it will take a very long time for me to invest in assets or income-generating projects. This therefore means that, for as long as I am a casual labourer, I will always work from hand to mouth.
