How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
We had already built a dairy unit before we received a transfer from GiveDirectly. Our focus was to keep modern cows in under zero grazing unit. Having received money from GiveDirectly that enabled us pay school fees for our children as well as invest in other agricultural activities, we are now focused on purchasing a dairy cow that we will keep in this unit. We are saving big from my husband's earnings considering that we have enough money to buy food from the existing poultry project as well as dairy that we keep. This project we expect shall be actualized soon enough and it shall raise the living standards of our family a lot.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does very well by enrolling all the deserving households within the village. They do this without any form of bias whatsoever. The fact that they give the support in form of cash is also a game changer, it gives everyone an opportunity to spend the money in the ways they are most comfortable with.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had used the first transfer to buy building materials and to add one more room in our house. When we received the second transfer, we thought it wise to cement the floor of this house to make it complete. We made a decision to improve our home since we are currently not so much pressed for fee payment as yet- our children are in the lower primary and we do not pay much fee for them as at now. When the time for paying secondary school fee shall come, then it shall be much more easy and then we can concentrate fully on it. I am a mother of two children and I only rely on subsistence farming to earn a living while my husband works as a mechanic to sustain the needs of our family. We are so grateful to GiveDirectly for what the support has meant to us as a family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 8:20 am and we had just finished having our breakfast. I was preparing myself to go to the farm when my phone rang just as I was about to place it in my pocket. I wondered what the SMS might be all about and hence I decided to check it. I was so surprised and happy when I opened the SMS and I read that we had received the KES 55000 that GiveDirectly had earlier promised us. My husband was away at work. I called him and I told him about the good news. He became so happy too and we gave thanks to God for the blessing. We now knew that the plans that we had made after the registration process was now going to be fulfilled.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a big difference in our lives as a family. This is because we managed to expand our house by building an extra room where our children and the guests can sleep. The children are getting older and it is wise for them to have their bedroom. The guests will also no longer lack somewhere to sleep whenever they come visiting. We are also glad because we managed to clear the debt that we had for the cow. We have thus saved the money that we could have spent paying off the debt for other important things.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 20000 of our recent transfer on expanding our house. We bought iron sheets, timber, and nails that were going to be used in building an extra room. We wanted the extra room so that the children and guests visiting our household could have a place to sleep. Our house was only two-roomed and we have been meaning for a long time to expand it but due to lack of money, we were not able to do so. I usually practice small-scale mixed farming while my husband is employed. The money that he gets paid at his workplace, most of it usually goes to the purchase of food and upkeep, payment of school fees for the children, and farming. Other than the above, we also spent KES 10000 on paying off debt. There was our neighbor who was selling a cow but we didn't have the money to pay for the cow at the time. We thus persuaded him to allow us to pay for it bit by bit. We have been doing so with part of the money that my husband gets paid at his workplace and KES 10000 was what we were still owing him. We decided to buy the cow because we didn't have one that could provide us with milk for our consumption. We also spent KES 15000 on buying murrum soil that we plan to use in cementing the floor of the room when we get the next transfer. With the remaining amount, we spent it on buying clothes for ourselves and the children. We are thus so much grateful to GiveDirectly for supporting us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will mean better breeds for my dairy farming. I started dairy farming one year ago together with my husband. Since he works in Nairobi in a security company, I usually do this business solely. Currently, I work with local breeds and the production is not that good. My ambition has been to purchase the improved breeds to enable me to get good returns in the business. I am happy that through these transfers I will be able to realize my dream and I intend to use KES60000 to buy the breeds and use KES20000 to renovate a dairy structure that is currently not in good condition. The remaining amount will cater to feeds.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the past two months, I joined a Sacco that is meant to save money. Since then I have been able to minimize the unnecessary cost that was burdening me. These savings will facilitate my dream of building a new house that we have been yearning for. I am happy that in the future I will have a decent house through these savings.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge I currently face is the demand in the market. My herd produces approximately 10 liters of milk in a day. I have customers, who come to pick milk every morning. Recently the demand for milk has gone high and I am not able to meet it because of the local breeds I have. I always adhere to proper feeds but the ability of the local breeds to produce more milk is not attained. These transfers from Givedirectly will be a stepping stone for my ambition.
