How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to grow vegetables. I have already cleared the land for planting but I haven't bought the seeds and fertilizer. I want to grow the vegetables because my child is currently in his final year of primary school, and thus he is going to join a secondary school in May this year. I want to prepare myself financially, I plan to sell the vegetables that I will grow to raise money for his studies and buy the stuff that will be needed when he joins the secondary school. I recently started a business with part of the transfer that I got from GiveDirectly. I plan to use the money that I am going to earn from the business in buying the vegetable seeds and fertilizer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well by holding a meeting with the community members before embarking on census and registration processes. They taught us well and we understood what the program was all about. I didn't see any problem with the way they were conducting their work and I, therefore, urge them to continue with the same.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the second transfer money on buying another cow. I bought the cow at KES 30000. I decided to buy the cow to add to the ones I had so that I could increase my milk production. I usually sell milk and the money from the sales usually helps me in buying maize for my family's consumption. Maize crops usually do not do well in our area due to the dry weather and hence we usually incur the cost of buying maize. I am hence so much grateful to GiveDirectly for the support that they have shown me.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the money I felt so happy. I had left my phone at home. I had went to look after the cows. I had not carried the phone .When I went back home , as I was checking my phone as usual, I saw a message that indicated that I have received money from GiveDirectly I felt do happy. I have never received such amount of money before. Immediately inform my family members and the all celebrated with lots of joy. I knew I would be able to buy a dairy cow and cut the cost of buying milk. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my living standard.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have purchased a dairy cow. I used to buy milk daily and it was so costly for me. I depend on casual jobs in the village and small-scale farming. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and I was not in a position to save some. Other basic needs took my attention and the small money that I was getting. My children were not getting enough milk. This was so demoralizing and stressful. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I felt so happy and found this as an opportunity to invest in dairy farming. Currently, I get enough milk for my children. The money that I could have used to buy milk I save for other basic needs. I will sell the surplus milk to earn an income. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has supported us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 27,000 to buy a dairy cow I used to buy milk daily and it's so costly for me. I also bought sofa set seats at KES 3,000. I bought food for the family, clothes And furniture. The rest of the money I used it to plough my farm and bought seeds and fertilizers. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has enabled me to own assets that could have taken quite some time to get.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better livelihood good for my young family. I plan to purchase a dairy cow. I currently own only one cow meaning there are times I don't get milk. During this time, I'm forced to purchase milk costing me 10dollars a month. Being peasant farmers and depending on casual labour jobs to earn income, this is a lot, I cant support regularly. Sometimes we go without food. This will cost me 30 dollars.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. At this time I'm done with all most all my day's work. My days is usually spent in the farm or any casual labour job I get. In the afternoon, mostly I would've earned something small for food and my mind is settled making me happy
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest hardship has been financial constraints. I live in semi arid area with very low rainfall. There are more dry seasons than wet seasons so we hardly harvest any crops. During the times with no harvest , we're forced to buy all the food stuffs which really strains us. My husband is a casual laborer, a truck driver, sometimes there are no work therefore he won't be in a position to support us. Years go by without us being able to improve our living standards.
