How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have not been able to construct a decent house for myself due to financial challenge I am facing. Receiving this money has enabled me to build a new decent house for my family which is still in construction. The one-roomed, iron roofed house has gained me the happiness I had lost for long.Truly, I feel that this is the biggest difference in my daily life. Secondly, a pair of oxen which has also attributed to food security in my household. This is because the pair has been very useful in cultivating a bigger area of my farm as compared to tilling this land by myself. On a few occasions, I have also been able to hire this pair to my neighbors and earn extra income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly had the best idea of alleviating poverty through sending money to my community members who were poor which had no conditions. It helped everyone in their area of need which was the most important thing be it to education school children or acquiring assets . There is nothing GD is not doing well according to me.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer to buy an ox for cultivation purposes . I bought building materials such as iron sheets, nails, and timbers which I am currently using to put up a new house. The one I had was old and one side had already collapsed hence I feared it would collapse anytime. I am glad that I haven't been render homeless because of the transfers. The remaining part of the transfer I used on buy my daily basis needs such as food.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having a pair of oxen has changed my life to be totally different. Previously, I used to struggle a lot in preparing my farm due to old age. I could not plow my farm on my own. I had to hire oxen from friends to do the work. This was so expensive and sometimes I could not afford it. To add to that, I could not prepare my farm in good time since the oxen were few in the village and everyone wanted the same service. I am now a happy farmer because I will no longer strain in preparing my farm and I am assured of getting some good harvests. I am glad that I will also hire them to my neighbor at a fee. This will be my additional income and in turn, provide basic needs to my family with ease.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6: 30am while I was doing some cleaning then I heard my phone vibrating. I was a bit nervous, I quickly checked what the message was all about. After reading the content I realized that it was an mpesa message from GD. They had sent my first transfer as they had promised during enrollment. I was so glad since it was my first time receiving such a huge amount of money.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a pair of oxen at KES 27000. For a long time I had dreamt of owning one but I was not able to fulfill this dream due to financial constraints. I have been hiring them to help in digging my farm but sometimes, I could not even afford the money for hire. Owning the oxen after purchasing it using the transfer is really a success story. In addition to that, I also bought some pieces of iron sheets at kes 6000 and other building materials. This was purposely for the construction of a new house since the previous one was almost collapsing. I then hired someone to plow my farm simply because the oxen that I had bought have not been trained to handle farm work and they were still young. I also cleared the huge fee balance that I had for my children. The remaining amount was spent on buying enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means I will be able to meet all the financial requirements needed such as hire a contractor, buy building materials e.g. poles, iron sheets etc to construct a bigger and better house for my family. The current one we live in is small and tilted on one side due to strong winds. With the remaining amount, I will purchase indigenous goats to help in meeting future financial needs such as paying for education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening marks the happiest part of my day because we eat quite well that is "ugali" and vegetables compared to morning when we just have plain porridge with no sugar or accompaniment.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our main struggle is financial inadequacy. Since am currently not active economically due to stomach issues, my wife has to bear the burden of supporting the family solely. The only income she gets is from cutting and selling firewood which fetches about a dollar a day that we mostly just end up buying food with. It has made it extremely difficult for us to even save up some money to build a better house and move out of this tiny tilted house that is almost collapsing. Being the village elder here, it is quite a shame to live under such conditions.
