How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment I don't have any new plans because I am contented with all that I have achieved in a short span. I am so grateful for the support that brought so much happiness into our lives.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Our society was lifted to a higher level, In that, support was tremendous and everyone was a beneficiary regardless of their financial status in the society. The staff are well behaved and professional in their work. In my opinion, GiveDirectly should consider more sustainable programs that can also create jobs for the youths.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had started constructing a decent house before but unfortunately, I was unable to do the finishing due to financial constraints. I am a farmer and a housewife, My husband is the one working, therefore, we all depend on him. When I received my transfer I used KES 27,000 in plastering the floor of my house. I then used KES 18,000 in purchasing a dairy cow to cut down on the cost of buying milk daily, and lastly, I used the remaining amount on foodstuffs. I am so grateful for the support that changed our living standards amazingly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving such a huge amount of money was the best moment of my life and the best thing that has ever happened to me and I thank God so much for giving us another opportunity to rise again out of the struggles we had been undergoing as a family. I was at home washing utensils when I received that message and since I had the phone with me, I read it immediately and I became so happy after confirming its content.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving my first transfer is that I have been able to buy a lactating cow. Buying milk has been so expensive that we would sometimes go for weeks without taking mixed tea as I also had to spend on buying maize and other crucial needs that we could not do without. I thank GiveDirectly so much for the great support that has transformed our lives and given us a reason to live and smile.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It has always been my desire to live in a permanent house since it is easy to keep it clean most of the time but I had not been able to achieve this due to financial constraints. On receiving my transfer, I decided to use KES 35000 to achieve this by cementing the floors. I bought all the necessary materials and paid the full cost of labor. Using the remaining KES 20000, I bought a dairy cow worth KES 25000 after topping up the extra amount. I settled on this so that my family will have enough milk for consumption and sale when it calves. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling us to achieve our dreams that seemed impossible before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For a long time, I have heard about giving direct support in the neighborhood. Your coming here means I shall be able to make my dream of living in a cemented house come true. I shall use approximately $600 to renovate and cement my house. I also want to add one dairy cow worth $250 because the one I have currently belong to someone within the village. Buying a dairy cow is a great investment to me because farming is not very productive now due to the nature of the soils here and the drought. I shall sell milk and earn at least $18 a month which will gather for my household needs. With the remaining amount, I shall purchase a water storage tank because I can collect rainwater from these roofs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon is always the happiest part of my day.I usually relax after taking care of my cattle in the morning and also doing some weeding in the farm.My happiness comes as a result of having peace within my heart and also when having no conflicts with the neighbors.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being jobless for both my husband and I was the greatest challenge we went through in the year 2016.We could barely afford basic commodities such food and clothes.I vividly remember there was a time when we could not buy a bar of soap.I had to borrow from my mother-in-law.
