How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intend to add a dairy cow since I already have a cow and heifer. This will boost my income hence will be able to pay school fees on time. I also intend to build a better kitchen because the current one is too tiny to even turn from one side to another hence can't accommodate my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is honest and true to their word. They promised that we would get the transfers in a month and true to their word we received them. The GiveDirectly officers are also very disciplined and there was no favoritism during enrollment. In terms of service delivery, I would rate GiveDirectly at 99.9 %.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After building a modern house using the first transfers, my key challenge was now water accessibility. So when I received the second transfer, I spent KES 17,000 on a water tank that can store volumes of water for a longer time. This is because earlier on we used to fetch water in a river that's two kilometers away. This was quite tiresome for my wife and kids. At times we were forced to hire a donkey or motorcycle to transport the water but this was quite costly. Now, I am grateful because since I bought the water tank we have lots of water to use and we no longer go to the river anymore.
Secondly, another challenge was food scarcity.
So with GiveDirectly transfers, I bought three bags of maize at KES 10,500. This is because in my small piece of land I normally do small-scale maize, beans, Sukuma, wiki, and spinach farming which cannot suffice my family most times due to long dry spells. Furthermore, I have been a high school cook for the past 10 years and my salary of KES 10,000 can only cater for school fees.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy. I remember it was around 9:20 am. I was in shool. I am a school chef. I was in the kitchen making the breakfast for the children. I heard a message from my phone. When I checked it out I couldn't believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such amount of money before. I immediately called my spouse to inform her of the good news. She was so happy too. I knew I would be able to build an extension room for my children and cement the floor of my house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have build an extension room for my children and cemented the floor of my house. We used to live in a small house which could not host all my family members comfortably. My children are grown and the have to live in a private room. This was not possible because I didn't had the money to buy the building materials to build them a house. I depend on small scale farming and causal jobs in the village. The amount of money that I get through this is so small and it was only for household items. It was not good to spent night in the same room with grown up children. When I received the transfer from GiveDirectly I felt so happy because I knew my plans will be fulfilled. Currently I have build them a house. They have their privacy and do their homework without being disturbed. We are also no longer exposed to dust particles because I have cemented the floor of my house. I am so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I work as a cook at Kaboson Girls High School where I earn sh 6000 per month. This money is not enough for me to educate my kids as well as do some developments or investment at home.I have been spending all my salary on food, clothes and school fees. Therefore receiving donations at giving directly shall enable me built a new house with approximately $250 as you can see this is small for my growing family. I shall also buy a heifer worth $300.This will grow and multiply the number of cattle as time goes by. When my kids will be joining secondary schools I shall have enough calves to sell and pay for kids' school fees. Milk produced by these cows will be sold therefore acquisition of household commodities such as food and clothing will be met easily.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I work as a cook and am always in the kitchen from morning to evening.Lunch is the happiest part of my day because I.get to eat enough food and get satisfied.Wednesday lunch is always my favorite because teachers eat traditional food such as mursik and managu and I also get to enjoy their sumptuous meal too.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
It has been a great challenge for me to pay school fees for my relatives and kids. I am the breadwinner of my family and my wife has no job. Earning a salary of 60 dollars a month doesn't meet all the necessities of my family. I have had times when my children stay at home due to a lack of school fees and when my family stays hungry due to lack of food. Lack of enough money has been a hindrance to the achievement of my dreams.
