How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life is that l managed to start the business of hiring plastic chairs in our village and this has earned me more money as compared the casual jobs that I used do in that I am able to support my parents in providing me withthe basic needs. They are very happy and feel relived by getting my support. The business has also supported people in the village since they no longer walk a long distance in search of plastic chairs for hire incase of any function.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion Give directly did very well by training people before starting the program, at least they created awareness of what they were doing. They also did well by dealing with people directly and not forcing people to get into the program. I did not see what Give directly did not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent most of the cash transfer to improve my business of plastic chairs for hire by adding more plastic chairs. I thought of this idea of starting the business because there was nobody who was doing such business within the village, and people could walk for long distance in search of chairs for hire in other villages whenever they had a function. Since I started the business it has been doing very well that I am able to get enough money that I can use to support my parents in providing the basic needs. As compared to before when I was doing casual work which could not earn me enough money to support my parents as compared to income l am generating from the business. It was also not agarantee that I was to get the casual job on daily basis. I also spent the transfer to buy decent clothes that I can put on when going a function. The remaining balance I spent to buy food for my family consumption where by I bought two bags of maize.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have improved income because I no longer share the profit with anyone. I can now comfortably meet the family's needs and I do not work for extra hours too because I'm able to make a good profit before the end of the day thus I get good rest.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had a contract with some businesswomen who I used to take to the market by 5:00 am. So on this fateful day, I woke up earlier than I usually do which was weird. So I picked the phone to check on the time and to my disbelief I had received money from GiveDirectly. That was 3;00 am, I woke my spouse, we checked Mpesa balance and it was true we had money in our account. I knelt, prayed and after that, we couldn't sleep for the rest of the night instead we stayed awake listening to music until 5:00 am when I went to pick the business women and took them to the market.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I bought a motorcycle with the first transfer so that I can have an improved income for my household needs. Throughout my life, I have been operating other people's motorcycle which had a lot of challenges including the employers terminating the contract without notice. This gave me hard time raising money for taking care of my family. Aside from that, I earned little because we had to share the income with the owner of the motorcycle. I'm happy I'm own boss currently and my income has improved thus the living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a great change in my life since I have been using a hired motor bike for a boda boda taxi, and now I will buy my own motor bike, and this means that all the daily submission that I used to pay the bike owner will go into my own family savings that in the long run enable me buy cows and pay dowrey to my wife and take my children to good school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is usually in the evening because I would have gathered some money from my boda boda taxi work and I would have bought food for the family, the fact that I got something on the table for the family brings that joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is being the sole breadwinner in the family and I have to pay fees to my siblings and buy food for my family and the mandatory daily submission of motor bike hire costs, its real hard moreso during rainy seasons that weather affects our operations, at times I am never able to meet my family obligations.
