How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to rear improved breeds of cattle. I am a veterinarian and I have observed that in our area, there is shortage of milk supply. The demand for milk is high. I, therefore, would like to rear the improved breeds of cows so that I can get more milk that I can sell and get money that will enable me to improve my veterinary business, that is, to buy drugs for treating livestock.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well because they changed the livelihoods of most people in the community for the better. They also taught us well in the meeting that they held with the community members before starting the enrollment process. I however, would like to recommend to them to reconsider enrolling some of the people that were left out. These are the people that have their own houses in the village and they usually go out to work and come over for the weekend. I feel that they should have been enrolled since they are usual members of the village and they also deserve to be helped.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 45000 of my recent transfer on buying a motorbike. I bought the motorbike so that it could help me in moving around from one place to another to provide my veterinary services. I usually spend a lot of money on transport costs since I have to travel to my clients' farms. I have been meaning to buy the motorbike but I was not able to since I didn't have enough money with me. I am glad because with the motorbike, I have managed to save money since the transport costs have reduced. I only spend a little money fueling it and that fuel is enough to move me from one place to another. This veterinary business is all that I have and depend on to provide for my family. With the remaining transfer amount, I used it in buying drugs for livestock treatment. I am thus grateful to GiveDirectly for supporting me.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 3pm while coming back from my veterinary work in the village, when I heard an SMS notification on my phone. On checking, it was KES55000 from GiveDirectly and I was very happy because I knew my dreams of owning a motorcycle had come true.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is purchase of the motorcycle using the transfers which has led to ease of accessibility. Through the motorcycle I can attend to more customers in remote villages within the shortest time possible hence more income. Before, I used to hire a motorcycle in order to reach my customers which was quite costly and time consuming but now I use less fuel and have more time to attend to as many customers as possible.

I spent KES 45000 on purchase of a second hand motorcycle which helps me access my clients in remote villages within the shortest time possible. I also spent KES 3500 on food and clothing and the rest I have saved towards purchase of veterinary medication once I get the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to open an agro-vet in Siongiroi town and buy a motorcycle. I am a certified veterinary officer and rely solely on this job to earn income. I plan to use KES 70000 to open an agro-vet so that I can diversify my income other than that from the veterinary services that I offer. I plan on getting a second-hand motorcycle that goes for KES 40000 that will enable me to reach more people who need my help and to transport drugs and other supplies that I will need in the agro-vet.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the last six months, I have offered my services to farmers who pay me on time. This has brought me joy because I have been able to buy more stock with the money and also take care of myself.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenges that I am currently facing are the distance that I cover in traveling to reach farmers and buying drugs for use in my job. I do not have any means and rely on motorcycle taxis to reach farmers who are very far and are very expensive. It is also expensive to acquire drugs and other supplies for farmers from other agro-vets and having one will enable me to sell to them at subsidized prices and also earn something from it.
