How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different from how it would have been had I never received the transfers. First, the transfers enabled me to fence our farm that we had not been able to for so long. Getting money to use in meeting our basic needs was always a hard task and fencing the farm had seemed like a luxury to me. Also, it to clear paying school fees for my daughter who had been sent back home. Had it not have been for the transfer, I would have sold the only dairy cow that we owned hence a reduction in the number of assets. With this, our daily expenditure would have increased since we would be forced to start buying milk daily.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, I feel that GiveDirectly did everything perfectly well and there is nothing that they did not do well. The unconditional cash given to everyone enabled people in my village to uplift their lives in one way or another. The field officers were also friendly and not biased henced they gained everyone's confidence.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I received my second transfer at a time when my daughter had been sent back home to collect school fees. We had not been able to raise anything by then as we were still looking for someone who would buy one of our dairy cows so my transfers came in handy. Also, I bought a sheep for rearing. This is an added asset to me that I can rely on in case of an emergency. In addition to this, I contributed KES 1000 in church when we had a fundraiser for church construction. I spent the remaining amount on food and other household necessities.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Paying school fee is an investment which every parent wish to make on their children in their life. Education has been and is still the backbone of every development and more so among the big agendas in this country. Having made to prioritize this school fees payment in our budget which we have seen it working is indeed the biggest difference in our daily life. No more struggles to look for school fees so that I may send my children back to school but I am counting the problem solved now since I have paid for the two terms ahead.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I first saw the confirmation message from the service provider that I had received the transfer, I could not hold my happiness. I woke my husband up to at least confirm with me the good news that had come to our family. My eyes were filled with tears of joy since I was seeing this as a complete turn of events. I was realizing that the poverty that we have been swimming in would soon come to an end. I thanked God for the great promise that He had delivered through GiveDirectly. The joy has never ended to date since every time we get to work, we do pray God that He may open more doors so that we completely forget how poverty looks like in our lives.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
The life I was living before the transfer came was so hard that I could not even afford to purchase foodstuff for my family but after receiving the money I was so much relieved that I started budgeting to ensure that I meet the cost of every insufficiency in the household. I spent part of the money on paying school fees for my children whose their time in school have never been consistent. They are now enjoying their full time in school studying like other students. I also spent part of the remaining amount in buying two rolls of barbed wires which I have used in fencing around my small piece of land and also in partitioning the maize fields and the grazing fields for my cows. I paid tithes to the church and also foodstuff for my household and the remaining amount went to savings to safeguard the possibility of us running short of other basic needs in our household.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a plan of paying school fees for my daughter who is in secondary school when I receive the transfers.I have not payed any amount of school fees this year and I had requested the principal of the school to give me more time.Last year I sold a cow to cater for the school fees and I want to replace it when I receive the transfers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My day's activities begin with feeding the cattle.During this dry season I feed them using leaves since there is very little grass. After my husband comes back from work from nearby farm he goes on to water the cattle as I prepare lunch for him and the children.I then relax through the afternoon and this is the time that I feel happy and enjoy the most since I am done with the day's activities.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I got married in 1974 and at that time my husband was a drunkard.I have lived with him in this condition for all those years until four years ago when he stopped taking alcohol. His behaviour cost us a lot moreso the education of our children.I have eight children and five of them could not join secondary school because my husband was not responsible enough to cater for the basic needs as well as their education. For all those years he left me a burden of trying to satisfy the basic needs of the family alone.I could not raise enough money for school fees.I thank God that he quit alcohol and the difference can now be felt.My last three children joined secondary school and my last born is now in form three.
