Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was still in bed when I heard a message notification tone from my phone. It was around 7 Am. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that GiveDirectly has sent me a sum of KES55,000 I felt so happy because that was the first time to receive such a higher amount. I woke up immediately and inform my family members and everyone was so happy. I knew I would be able to buy a cow. This was my priority because buying milk daily was so costly. I withdrew the money the following and planned with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The cost of buying milk daily is so costly for me and purchasing a heifer is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I will cut this cost when it reproduces in the next few months. I had always wished to own a dairy cow but I did not have the money. I depend majorly on farming and casual jobs in the village. Due to recurrent household basic needs and school fees for my children I was not in a position to save some money. I did not know when I would be able to own a dairy cow. it was like a dream for me. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I saw my dream come true. it was almost an impossibility for me. I felt so happy because it was the highest amount I have ever gotten. Currently, I have a heifer and I know in the next few months I would get enough milk for my family and even sell the surplus to earn some money. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed my story to be the best.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 22,000 on purchasing a heifer. I will get enough milk when it reproduces in the next few months and I will cut the daily cost of buying milk. My family will get enough milk and even sell the extra to earn an income. I spend KES 10,000 on school fees for my son who is in secondary school. He is now studying well without being disturbed like before. I spend part of it on my medication and the rest of the money I spend on food and household items. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standards to be much better than before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been aspiring to venture into dairy farming but due to financial constraints, this has remained to be a dream. I like it because it is not only a good way of employing myself but dairy products are a good source of protein. I do casual jobs such as fetching firewood for sale and the much I can earn per day is KES 200. I intend to use KES 30000 from my transfer to buy a lactating Friesian cow that will produce at least 5-liters of milk every day. I will then sell the milk for KES 40 per liter earning me KES 200 per day. Receiving this money will give me financial independence and also relieve me from the casual jobs that are energy draining.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December last year, my son was awarded a bursary of KES 5000 by Chepalungu Constituency Bursary Kitty. This catered for his school fees for one academic term and I was very happy about it
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been experiencing a sharp pain on my waist lately and because of lack of money, I have not had a medical examination. The pain is severe to a point that I cannot lift anything heavy. I feel that the situation will soon spin out of control if urgent medical attention is not sought.
