How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always wanted to build my own house, having lived in a friend’s house for so long. I could not afford to buy the necessary materials on my own, such as iron sheets. It was not until I started getting the transfer that I started saving money to help with the construction project. I have been buying iron sheets every month, and I now have ten of them. My goal is to purchase at least 15 pieces to begin the construction process. I do not have any other objectives apart from building the house. I will be at ease knowing I have my own good house to stay in and will not have to rely on friends for shelter.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent money on buying iron sheets, two chickens, and daily food for my family. I have been staying at a friend's house for a while now. I am now 21 years old, and I want to have my own home where I can plan for myself and enjoy my privacy. I have been saving money every month to build the house, and I have already purchased ten iron sheets. I am aiming for 15 iron sheets in order to begin purchasing other materials, such as building poles. Having my own home means that I will no longer be dependent on my friends for shelter. In addition, I used some of the recent transfers to buy chickens, of which I now have more than ten. I work at a food kiosk, which pays very little per day, and I believe that having this poultry project will supplement my income and increase my savings. I can sell the chickens later to help with the house's construction. I am also responsible for my six siblings, so I used the transfer to buy food, including maize flour, that would last for several weeks. We had enough food for the entire family to eat. We never went a single day without eating. I am grateful because the transfer has made it much easier to meet the family's basic needs, as opposed to when there was no financial support.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I previously had a house, but it collapsed and due to the financial challenges, I had never brought it up. My goal for the coming year is to build a permanent house and so far I have started buying iron sheets with the transfers that I received and still planning to use my future transfers to put other materials in place.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have always desired to have livestock of my own, but I had never gotten the money to start me off because the income that I manage to get is always channeled to other needs. But the transfers that I received from GiveDirectly was of great impact, I managed to buy a goat worth KES.2000 something that I had been longing for. With the remaining transfers, I also bought food worth KES. 970 and spent KES. 500 on clothes. I felt happy knowing that my dream will finally come true.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As soon as I received my transfer, I spent KES 2,000 on a new set of clothes. I had not been able to buy new clothes because I did not have any formal engagements. Previously, I lacked presentable attire. I am glad I now have better clothes that make me look presentable and smart. In addition, I spent KES 1,000 on five chicks. I rely on my hotel-owning sister for support because I cannot sustain myself. Even though the fact that I have both parents, they are unable to support me. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for its financial assistance.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It was a good idea for GiveDirectly to give unconditional cash support to people. Even though we have not received much of the support but the second transfers we have received has brought back life in our village because people do not sleep hungry as was the case before especially with the prolonged drought that has led to scarcity of food. I do not have any complains about the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Part of my first transfer was deducted for a phone that I was given during the enrollment stage, so I received KES 1200 as the first transfer which I spent on 3 chickens for rearing. I am still under my parents' care but it is about time I should be independent. I am hopeful that in the future, once they will have multiplied then I can sell some of them to raise money for my needs hence I will not rely on my mother. At the time when I receive the second transfer, we had run out of cornflour for our family. I, therefore, bought a bundle of corn at KES 1200 so that I could relieve my mother of the burden. We solely depend on her, but she does not earn much from her small business. I have seven more siblings who rely on her for their school fees, clothing, food, and medication. This is too much for her, and I am glad I was able to assist. With the remaining KES 1800, I used KES 1500 to purchase a heavy polythene bag for roofing my house which was under construction. I am happy I now have a house and I do not sleep in my neighbor's house anymore. It is so peaceful to have your own house I am controlled by anyone on when to sleep and when to wake up. KES 300 I spent on both a shirt and a pair of trousers so that I can also have some decent clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at around 9 O'clock in the morning and I was just resting in the house. That morning, I was much disturbed with the condition of my house whose roof was not fully done. In the middle of all these, I heard a message notification which upon checking, I confirmed that I had received my transfer. I was so excited to receive that support. As a result, I decided to inform my mother who was equally happy to have received the her transfer. She was equally overwhelmed with joy.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am glad that courtesy of GiveDirectly's transfer, I was not only capable to support my mother in acquiring food stuffs, but also succeeded in mending my house' roof. My house' roof had been leaking from the month of February. My life is now better in that I am no longer worried about rains. Fixing the roof with polythene bag is going to relieve me from the stress of long rainy season.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I contributed part of my transfer towards the purchase of food stuffs for my family. This I did due to fact that my mother lacks a reliable source income, and whatever the wages she earns are low to meet the increasing prices of essential commodities. We consider being in the GD program as God's divine intervention for us. We there pooled part of our transfer and spent them on buying a dozen of 2kg maize flour at KES 1,400. In addition, I spent the remaining transfer on buying a black polythene which I used to cover part of my house roof because it had been leaking during rainy seasons.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I do not have the financial muscle to build a decent house for myself. My small house has a nylon roof which is halfway done and I expect to spend 1,000 KES to finish up the remaining bit. The 200 KES remaining will help me support my mother to buy food by purchasing maize flour. My long term plan is building a better iron sheet roof.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I recently shifted to my three weeks old house. Even though it is tiny, I am glad that I have a house. I had nowhere to sleep until recently when a relative whom I had helped take care of her goats paid me 1,000 KES. My roof is half thatched with nylon paper and I hope to finish it up bit by bit.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Sitting idle at home with no source of income is a real challenge for me. This is because I cannot earn my own money to progress my life or even support my mother. I dropped out of school at the age of 10. I was raised by a single mother together with my 5 siblings after the passing on of my father when I was a little child. It has therefore been difficult securing a job to sustain my needs.
