How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I had a new goal which was to buy some new beddings like a new bed and mattresses. For years I have been sleeping on the traditional beddings which I was always complaining of back pains. By am sure by having them would have been a great relief to me.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been doing a great job in my village in many ways. First, the money was sent directly into our Mpesa accounts and I was given all the freedom on how I would wish to spend it. This has powered us to own lots of livestock, build houses, send our children to schools, and even start up new businesses. On the other hand, I do not see any sector that GiveDirectly needs to improve on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying three goats worthy of KES 10000. I have been yearning to have them for years but I couldn't afford them because of financial hardships. I settled for them because they take little time to mature as compared to other domestic animals. Also, I cleared school for my children and bought new uniforms which I am glad they are now studying peacefully without any hiccups. In addition to that, I bought a bag of cement at KES 700 and sand at KES 300. This was purposefully for the renovation of my house (fixing a new metal door). I am so happy that for now, I feel there is enough security in my household and I do not have to worry about any kind of theft. With the remaining amount, I bought foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9:45 in the morning when I had attended a meeting in the nearby village. I later heard a message ringtone on my cellphone which was an indication that there was an incoming message. I was so curious and I had to check its contents becasue it was so usual for me to receive a message at that particular time. Upon checking, I confirmed that it was an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology, I had finally recived the precious gift that I had anxiously been waiting for. I couldn't contain my joy and I remember leaving for home even before closing the meeting. After arriving home, I shared the news with my family members and started celebrating.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am hopeful and happier. It has always been my desire to rear goats for a long period but because of my financial constraints, I couldn't afford to buy any. I opted to purchase them because goats, always reproduce and mature faster compared to other livestock animals. This is a clear indication that I will have many of them within a short period. I am therefore planning to sell the offspring once they mature and the money will be helping me in paying school fees for my children. In addition to that, I will not be straining so hard in meeting my family's basic needs as I used to do previously when I depended on casual jobs with meager incomes (KES 150) in a day. Raising my seven children will now be easier courtesy of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on paying school fees of KES 6000 for my son who is in secondary school in the nearby town. He has been on and off becasue of the huge fees arrears which used to frustrate both of us becasue it was affecting his academic performance. Also, I bought a new mattress for my children since they have been sleeping on the floor for years and this was affecting their health regularly. In addition, I bought three goats KES 8000 which have been my long-time dream to own them but I couldn't afford them because they were too costly. Also, I bought a metal door KES 7000 which was to replace the wooded one which had worn out and I was always feeling insecure. With the remaining amount of money, I have been using it to buy enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means an improved living standards for my household. This is because I am a housewife and my husband relies on casual labor which earns him very little.Due to this, It is extremely hard to meet all our basic needs for the family.I am planning to spend Kshs.30,000 to buy two indigenous cows and an oxen plough at Kshs.8,000.I will also use Kshs.15,000 to buy five indigenous goats at Ksh.3,000 to breed. The remaining amount will help me to pay school fees as well as other basic needs such as food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because I get enough time to relux and chart with my husband.Unlike in the in morning and afternoon hours, when I am busy doing household tasks.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is food insecurity mainly because of low rainfall in the area. It has been three years since we received ample rain. This has been the biggest stumbling block to living a decent life because most of the money my husband gets from charcoal-burning business Kshs.4,000 per month is not enough for all house hold expenses.
