How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If I get funds, I plan to fence my land and start crop farming on my own. Currently, I let someone else use my land; they cover all production costs, and I only get a share of the harvest. By farming myself, I can earn more from selling the surplus and use the extra income to meet my other needs. Taking control of the farming will allow me to make the most of my land and improve my financial situation.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I loved the GiveDirectly officers for the respect they showed me. The unconditional support from the organization allowed me to spend on my needs that I hadn’t been able to address for the longest time, like building a house. Thank you, GiveDirectly, for your support. May you continue changing more lives using the same approach.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to have a small one-room house where, during the hot season, my children and I would sleep outside, some in the house, and others at the neighbor’s place. Thanks to Givedirectly’s support, I used $350 from my final transfer to build an additional room with an iron sheet roof and walls. Now, when my children and grandchildren visit, I can comfortably host them. I also used the remaining $100 to build a latrine. Before that, we had to share with neighbors or go in the bush. This support has truly transformed our living situation.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year I plan to build a toilet of my own, build a kitchen and deal with my eyes that are slowly losing sight..I hope that I will be able to raise enough money to deal with all these.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GD does well by giving cash to us. This gives us an opportunity to spend the money in a way that pleases us. I can now plan ahead. I now have a double house and can have visitors anytime
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Was living in a small house that I had always wanted to improve but I never had the ability. With my age I only depend on well wishers but they also have their own needs. They could only help in providing money for food. I thank God that I have been able to complete my house right now with the second transfer. All my children are married and staying in their various houses while I separated with my wife and I now live a lone

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I have a clear memory of the day my transfer arrived. I was at home, relaxing in the late afternoon, when my phone unexpectedly rang. As I am illiterate, I waited for my helper to arrive so that he could read the message for me. To my joy, when he came, he revealed that GiveDirectly had sent me money, instantly filling me with happiness. Fueled by this newfound enthusiasm, I began eagerly considering how to make the most beneficial use of the funds.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life results from the financial support I received. It has empowered me to easily acquire essential food supplies such as maize and even invest in a decent bedding. In the past, these necessities were out of reach due to financial constraints. Now, I am filled with optimism about the possibility of constructing a decent house once I receive my second transfer, a prospect that brings me immense happiness and satisfaction. I will always treasure the gift that has transformed my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfer, I recognized it as the perfect opportunity to acquire essential household items like bedding and plastic chairs, which I had been unable to afford due to financial constraints. My old age and disability make it challenging for me to work, so I rely on my children to make ends meet. I am married, although my wife lives in a neighboring town, and we are blessed with six children. I allocated $60 to purchase decent bedding, including a mattress and a bed, and spent $36 on two plastic chairs and a table. Additionally, I invested $50 in buying clothes. The remaining $80 was utilized to purchase essential food items, crucial for our well-being. I am delighted to have ample food in the house, a significant improvement from the past when I could only afford one meal a day. Thus, I am forever grateful for the positive change in our circumstances.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Hygiene is the most important thing for a sickly person like me and without the necessary facilities like a pit latrine, it is difficult to lead a normal live. Since, I do not have a stable source of income and only rely on people for assistance, I have not been able to raise enough money. I plan on using the transfers to build one for myself because it has been a challenge using an open space. I will also purchase crutches as the ones I have are very old and make me strain my back. I am so happy because my life will change for the better.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When I got involved in an accident two years ago, I was left devastated because I cannot walk without using crutches. I am thankful to God because with time my health is improving and I am getting better each day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Since I fell ill, my life has been difficult because I cannot fend for myself not even attend to regular medical check-ups. My children are all grown up and live in a different place hence I am all alone. I borrow food from my neighbors and this has burdened me.
