How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I recognized that plastering will make my house more appealing and attractive after building the pillars to support it. I, therefore, came up with a goal for the end. In that sense, I want to paint and plaster my house before the middle of the next year. This is due to the fact that living in a beautiful location makes one feel happy, safe, and confident.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Through its monetary giving programs, GiveDirectly has achieved great success. The lives of many people in my village have been improved. For myself, I now possess a good house, livestock, and a toilet. Thanks to GiveDirectly, I was previously living in a shameful situation. I have not yet identified a need for improvement on the part of the organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Living in a home that had no toilet was very shameful and unhygienic. Not only that I was tired of going to the bush for nature calls but also I could not withstand the shame of taking my visitors to the same place. When I got the second transfer, I spent $210 to construct a toilet. As we speak the toilet is ready and I am happy because the shamefulness is no longer here with me neither the unforeseen outbreak of diseases will be minimized. Thereafter, I used $180 to renovate my house by constructing some pillars to make it firm. I also bought two goats for $74 in addition to the cow that I bought using the first transfer. Since I had a shortage of chairs at my home, I bought four pieces for $29. After that, I used the remaining amount to buy food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I heard the news about the transfer from my neighbors who were rejoicing for receiving their transfer. It was around 5:30 pm when I was at home alone relaxing after completing the day's activities. At first, I was worried that I might have missed my transfer. I was carried away by many thoughts that crosses my mind about my transfer. I was overwhelmed with joy when I received two consecutive messages on my phone indicating that I had received the transfer. This redeemed the hopes that I will be able to achieve most of my desires.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently enjoying my nights using proper warm clothes unlike before. This has saved me from the cold-related illnesses that could have bothered me. In addition, I am no longer ashamed whenever I received visitors to my house since I have proper chairs to offer them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I had desired to restart my shop business which I had been operating 10 years ago but it collapsed due to the lack of enough capital. I spent KES 25,000 to construct a small structure for the business. In addition, I used KES 5000 to clear the fees arrears for my 4 children who are still in primary school since they had huge fees balances. Furthermore, I spent KES 3000 to purchase new warm clothes for myself since we are experiencing winter in our area and I did not have enough garments. For the remaining amount, I used KES 5000 to purchase 7 plastic chairs for my family since we use to sit on the floor something very embarrassing whenever we received visitors.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a witch doctor. It has been my source of income for years that enabled me to feed and educate my family. In the year 2018, I decided to relocate to this village after my business started to collapse. Since I came to this area I planned to open a retail shop to sell foodstuffs so that I can cease to rely on the witch doctor business, therefore I intend to use the first transfer to finish the small structure of the shop and also buy stock. The second transfers to marry a young and beautiful wife who can take care of me because the first one left.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Past two months my nice came to visit me after so many years. He connected me with two clients who needed treatment, from them I earned some money that has sustained me until this moment. This brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of customers for my witch Doctor business is the challenge that I currently encounter. It's the only skill I have been dependent on to earn a living for many years. Since my wife left me the business has been so down to an extent that I could not able to pay rent for the house I was staying in in Kikambala. That's where I thought it was wise to come to this village to get more customers which I was wrong. The only choice remaining is to the farm of which the prolonged drought has also turned the land to be barren. Hopefully almighty is going to restore my power so that things be as it was.
