I was the sole breadwinner of my family before I was enrolled in the program as my wife did not have any source of income. She was unable to take up any job offers or go out in search of daily casual jobs because she could not leave behind our little child. When I started receiving the transfers, I decided to set her a grocery business near the house where she now earns some money that can help take care of some of our household needs. A lot of pressure has been taken off me because I know that in case I fail to make any money from the casual jobs that I mostly rely on, my family will still have a meal. Before the project, my family would go hungry if I failed to provide because there was no alternative source of income and all eyes were always on me.

I started a grocery business for my wife when I started receiving the transfers so that she would also have a source of income and something to keep her busy while still being available for our children. The profits from this business have been of great support to my little income making life easier. For this reason, I wish to invest more of the transfers on the business by adding more stock and new items that we do not sell at the moment so that we can increase the profits.

I used part of the money I recently received to pay my child's school fees for the month, cleared a debt I had from the nearby shop where we had borrowed a few items within the month then saved the rest for household needs through the month.

Before I could struggle to do hard and low paying causal jobs in my community. This was so engaging and the certainty of getting it on a daily basis depended on chances meaning at times I could even get a deal once a week. I have a family to take care of and meeting the needs needed me to strain a lot. I had felt devastated by the hardship I had been through. Truly speaking the biggest difference in my daily life is the ease I achieved paying school fees for my child without straining using GiveDirectly transfers and part of the profits from the business. I am happy because I can now stock food for monthly use in the house with the transfer and part of the business profits.

My new goal is to focus more on saving my transfers and income from the business the I operate with my spouse in order start up another business depending on my spouse's choice. When it will be up and running, we will be generating doubled profits on a day to day basis. The advantage of having this business in place is that we will be able to take care of any financial emergencies and daily family needs.

We agreed as a family to boost our business with the recent transfer in order to be able to generate more profits that can keep the family going and save at the same time since the more capital we have in place, the more goods we will be selling out and the more we will be to get from the business venture.The remaining amount I spent on buying household expenditures

I have been using part of the previous transfers including the recent transfers to restock the grocery shop and I'm glad the business has grown. Previously I could only manage to get a stock of 2000 KES but currently, I'm able to purchase a stock of 5000 KES after every two days. This has led to an improved income thus improved living standards.

Currently, I run a grocery shop which is doing quite well but still, it's not good enough to meet all the family's needs because of the large family that I have. I, therefore, have an additional goal of saving some money so that I can open a food kiosk business to supplement the current income.

I had not paid house rent at the time when the recent transfer was sent. I, therefore, paid for this month's rent with a bigger portion of the money so that I could avoiding wrangles with the landlord as it used to be the case previously for not paying the house rent on time. Part of the money I paid for my child's school fee balance so that I could reduce the amount of fee she owed the school. A portion of the money I used to boost my business which is my major source of income and I'm glad it has picked up so well and I'm earning a good profit from it compared to the previous times.

My goal now is to concentrate on becoming fully self-employed by owning enterprises such as a butchery or supplying commodities like eggs in wholesale.

The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now pay my rent on time and my child stays in school without getting worried that he might be sent home for school fees. I am also able to provide for my family without much struggle unlike before.

I spent my most recent transfer to expand my green grocer business, to pay school fees for my child and to purchase household items such as meals in my house. I own a green grocer business in Mathare 4A village, which my wife runs for me most of the time, as I focus on casual jobs such as construction jobs. I opened up this business last year in 2018 in the month of August. I sell items such as kale, spinach, tomatoes, onions; among other vegetables. The business is so far doing well and I am also able to provide for my family with the transfers that I have been receiving from Give Directly.

I was asleep on that day at 5:00 AM in the morning, when I heard a message come into my phone. I did not bother to check this message as I thought it would be the usual messages that I receive from Safaricom at that time. I left the house later on that morning at around 10:00 AM and I met my friends who asked me if I had received my transfers. I rushed back to the house to check my phone and that is when I saw the message. I was very happy and surprised at the same time and I took some time to think and plan on how I would spend the money. I also knew there and then that truly the transfers were real.
