How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Were it not for GiveDirectly, I would not have become a dairy farmer in an instant. I am so happy that I was able to establish an income-generating activity. I also invested some in maize farming. The crop is doing so well and I expect to make an income after harvesting and selling it. I am also happy that I have a television set that keeps me informed on international and national news. I am so proud because I am ar a pint where I can inform my neighbors of currently developing stories. I am the man on the know now!
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well when they come house to house to confirm that they were enrolling the right people. They also did well on the fact that they thought people on the importance of utilizing the money well on their development need and not just consume it with only foodstuffs. As a result, many have invested in different ways that have to improve their lives.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent the money I received on buying a cow. I needed this was the surest way of establishing a source of a daily income. In my village, people all rely on dairy farming except I did not have a cow. Additionally, I bought some sheep so that I am able to grow economically as they multiply. I then bought some foodstuffs for the household including clothes.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
My life has greatly changed since I received my first transfer. It is always my happiness to see my family happy and healthy thus I always struggle to put a meal on the table and bring in more assets that we can lean on as a family during hard times. Upon receiving money from GiveDirectly, I spent some amount on my family wellness. I bought a cow that has provided milk for both household consumption and sales. I am happy that this has given me a peaceful mind in that it has reduced my daily expenses and added an income to us. Also, I bought goats to rear in my homestead. I am hopeful that they will soon reproduce thus have more that we can sell to meet family needs or to get more income to invest in other goals. I am happy that GiveDirectly has improved our family assets.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a long-time goal of buying a cow that showed up early that morning upon realizing that I had received money from GiveDirectly. I had wished for long to buy a dairy a cow to relive me the burden of buying milk daily but I couldn't due to limited resources. I felt so happy when I saw the money in my Mpesa account since I knew I would be able to get the cow I had wished for long.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I majorly depend on subsistence farming to support my family. I always work hard to maintain and improve my farming to enable me to sustain my family. When I received my first transfer, I spent most of it in farming. I took part of it to buy livestock. I bought a cow and two goats that I am happy with since these are my added assets and I have milk for both household consumption and sales. Also, I used some amount to buy farm inputs that include maize seeds, fertilizers and hired a tractor to help me in land preparation and planting. I am hopeful with what I have done in that I will have a better yield next harvesting season. This will give us enough food and surpluses to sell to meet other family needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to actualize my plans of rearing sheep.I have always seen this as a great investment because sheep multiply quite quickly and having some will help me meet my other long term goals. My family owns a large piece of land and therefore I do not see any challenge with this venture since there will be enough pasture. In a few years,I will have quite a flock which I will sell then buy a plot at a nearby town where I can put up a building for commercial purposes
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is the time that I evaluate myself on whether I have met the goals I had set for the day.Being a household head requires a lot of discipline and every morning I put down what I want to do for the day so that I can meet my family's needs. On most days am able to push myself to meet these goals and this makes me very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I completed high school and managed to get a good grade that could secure me placement in college. At that time,my parents were struggling to pay fees for my other three siblings to be able to complete secondary school too.My dreams of taking a course in Criminology were therefore shuttered and I was left to do casual jobs to assist them. With time I gave up on this dream and decided to get married. This is where the biggest struggle is because as the family head I have to fully provide for my family. The challenge comes when you are not certain that you will be in a position to provide due to lack of an income.Raising a family without any income and skills to secure employment has been the biggest hardship I have faced.
