How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Rearing many indigenous breeds of cows on my farm that produce less milk has been so expensive since their feeds are costly, yet no much income from their products. At the moment, I have a new goal to sell the three crossbreed cows to buy two Frisians that will potentially increase milk production, thus a better income to support my family of seven.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did amazing work in our village. The choices every household made after receiving the unconditional cash transfer have transformed every household. The idea of sending money directly to everyone's account was very efficient and showed how transparent the process was. We all received the same amount at the same time, and this sparked joy in the village and motivated everyone to spend wisely. All the promises were honored, and no one complained within the village throughout the process.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before receiving the first transfer, I had construction work that I was doing. The single house we had been living in was getting smaller for my current family of seven and had to put up a bigger one. Even though I have not completed to date since I have been building in phases, I am happy that KES 20000 from the second transfer played a great role in the completion of the walls after buying more timber, fixing the ceiling board in all the rooms, and also applied paints to the outside walls. I also paid KES 10000 tuition fees for my son currently in secondary school. For the past years, he has never settled in school since our dependence on farming to pay his school fees has never been reliable. I was happy to clear the arrears, and he is now enjoying ample time in school. In addition, I invested KES 10000 in buying two sheep that I am currently breeding to sell the offspring later when paying school fees for my children. I bought tomatoes and onion seeds with KES 3000 and spent the remaining g on buying foodstuff for my family. I am grateful for the support from GiveDirectly that has transformed not only my family but also my neighboring families.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 am while chopping nappier grass for my dairy cows that's when I heard a message alert on my phone. On checking, I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy, this motivated me to work harder, and withdrew a few days later
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is the payment of my son's this term's school fees. As a result, can fully concentrate on his studies without any disturbance. Before I had decided to sell one of my dairy cows his school fees but GiveDirectly came on time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a father of five and a farmer. To feed my family and school my kids I normally do small-scale farming of sukuma wiki, onions, tomatoes, indigenous, and oranges which my wife sells for an income. I also have three dairy cows which are also a source of income. When I received the transfers, I used KES 23,000 on the payment of my son's this term's school fees. As a result, I do not have to sell the cow I had intended to for school fees. Secondly, I spent KES 20,000 on the purchase of construction materials for completing the construction of a three-roomed timber walled house. This I had I started building in November last year but had run a shortage of funds. Thirdly, I also spent KES 8,000 on the latest clothing fashion for my family. For the rest, I spent KES 2,000 on food and household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Have been struggling to finalize on my newly built house which it started on August last year. It has taken six months and it is not yet complete. It has inconvenienced my three schooling children since they have no ample space for revision. I also own three dairy cows and I could wish to add one more to boost the amount of milk I sell to vendors. This will greatly enable me pay school fees for my son who is in secondary school without much struggles. I will also prioritize the completion of my house if I become lucky to receive the Give Directly's transfer.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I only enjoyed the Christmas festive season. The other days remains normal with daily thoughts of how I can accommodate my family's needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I face a very serious challenge in terms of school fees payments. Currently I don't have milk to sell thus depending too much on crop production which is heavily affected by unpredicted weather pattern.
