How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I'm passionate about business and I enjoy it. After looking around my neighborhood, I discovered that there are no stores nearby, and the closest one is an hour away. As a result, opening a store in the area makes more sense because customers won't have to travel further to shop. I want to put some money away so I can open a shop here and serve the locals. This will not only prevent people from having to walk farther to buy items, but I think I will also earn some good sales.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Previously noted for its poverty, our region has improved. The majority of children were unoccupied, some had quit school to work irregular hours, and others had tiny homes with little bedding, but all of these things are now history thanks to the assistance. Giving us money with no limits and taking into account our locality in their assistance was wonderful of Give Directly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Using the first disbursement, I had begun building a house, but I was unable to finish it because I was out of money. I paid $280 to finish building it when I got the second transfer. Having a decent, spacious, constructed home that is more stable feels good. Additionally, I have not been able to plow a larger area of my farm, 2 acres for quite some time, which has prevented me from producing a good harvest to feed us. In order to clear the farm and pay for other farm expenses, I used $160. The crops are excellent, and we are currently weeding in the hopes of a better yield. I bought eight hens with the remaining $48 of the $88 in the hopes that they would breed and I could sell some of them. I still have $4 in savings for use around the house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had left the phone in the house busy working on my farm which is just adjacent to our home. I could not realize that I received the transfer until after I completed my chores. I remember it was around 8 am when I got time to interact with the phone. I was surprised when I saw the message from GiveDirectly indicating that I had received my transfer. I felt extremely happy about receiving my transfer since it was my first time receiving such aid and I had only heard from the neighbor about the transfer. In the back of my mind, I was very sure that I will be able to solve most of my financial problems.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently owning and living in a decent shelter. Previously, I was very afraid that my house would collapse at any time. In addition, I was able to start poultry farming with my transfer, this will serve as the future investment that I will rely on whenever I encounter financial challenges.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer to renovate my house which was collapsing, it was shaking on one side which was risky and always kept me worried. I spent KES 24,000 to purchase the building materials like 6 bags of cement, building sand, 20 building poles and paid the labour cost. Currently, I am happy that I am living in a decent and stable house. Furthermore, I spent KES 2400 to start poultry rearing by purchasing 6 chicken for the beginning. This is a long-term investment as well as a source of income for my family. Additionally, I bought new clothes for KES 3500 for every family member since we did not have enough clothes to change. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing food because we are encountering famine in our area.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Sleeping in a spacious room has been my dream but with all the plans I have put in place I have not been able to own one. My only child does not have a house as well, as old as I am,51 years, I am still sharing the same room with him. Receiving this money means using 18,000 KES to build my dream house and I will give my current house to my child. I will use the remaining amount on food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The coming of Givedirectly to my village, I have been wanting to build a spacious house and I already have most of the material, I was missing the money to buy iron sheets and I know when I receive them I will immediately build it.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am the one providing for my family and currently, I have been unwell for the past two days. I borrowed 1000 KES from my brother to use for food. I was to go to the hospital but I do not have enough money and I am now planning to meet a witch doctor to treat me as they are always cheap.
