How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal which I didn't have before receiving the transfer which is to own livestock more so goats. I trust that by owning them, I will be in a better position to pay fees for my grandchildren, whom I have been their guardian, also I will be able to sort all the bills on time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a perfect job by ensuring that they enrolled all needy households in our village . This has brought a very huge transformation in our community, especially with our houses, they are now all iron-roofed, also each household has one or two goats whereby before we had none. I do not see anything that needs to change so far.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a new bed and a mattress at KES 12000. For the past thirty years, I have been sleeping on the floor together with my grandchildren. We used to suffer a lot and I have always been praying to God to see us through and offer a solution. We are now grateful and happier as a family because we have been sleeping comfortably without any difficulties, this has even restored our health. Also, I paid fees for my grandson who had recently joined high school. It has been my pleasure and dream to see him prosper in life considering I never had the chance to go to school. I can see a greener future ahead of him courtesy of GiveDirectly. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my six family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was with my daughter outside our house relaxing while sharing interesting stories. We received the message notification at around 4 pm from the m Being illiterate, I handed over my phone to her, and after checking she informed me that I had received my transfer. I was very happy for receiving my transfer since I had never handled such a huge amount of money in life. In addition, I was very sure that I will be able to accomplish most of my long-term goals
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Seeing my child not suffering due to lack of proper shelter for him has given me a peace of mind in my life. Currently, he did not have to walk a long distance at night which was very risky. Having accomplished all this makes it the biggest difference that am currently have in my life something that I thanked the organization for.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My priority was to construct a decent shelter for my grown-up boy, he was seeking shelter from his grandfather's house which is far away from our home. He had to walk every night to my maternal home to seek shelter which bothered me a lot. I spent KES 30,000 to construct a one-roomed house for my son. I also bought a bed and mattress for 12,000 this is because I was using a traditional bed which was not comfortable. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food for my family of 3 member because we are currently experiencing drought and famine in our area.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Here, I stay with my co-wife who is older than me in this same house. Our husband died in the last five years and ever since we have been struggling together with our rooms having no beds. With the old age we both are, it has been a painful sleeping experience. Sometimes when we miss something to eat and the same time remember that place you will lay your head, you just know that it is a total nightmare. So this transfer from Give Directly will help us buy nice beds and mattresses at least to have the feeling of good sleep.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The joy of a mother is to see her children grow and develop both physical and financial. August last year, my eldest son got a job in mombasa and it has been praising God kind of a moment for me for what He has done for me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
School fees for my grandchildren is a big challenge in my life. I have two grandchildren whom their parents separated and I have been the one taking care of them. One of them is now in class eight and I do not know where I will get the fees for her to join high school. The other one is also in dire need of school uniforms because she is going to school with home clothes.
