How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am so happy that the goals that we had in mind were accomplished. This was to own a piece of land. I am so glad that I am a proud owner of two acres of land. The previous one was a family land and I never had the freedom besides the land was not productive. Most of the time, I had to lease from friends which was a bit costly. I will now be preparing my farm in time which is an assurance of high yields.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a splendid job that is evident in the transformations in my village. Before the visit, we were facing both economic and financial hardships in our lives which was as a result of the extreme poverty that we were living in. We now have good iron-roofed houses, livestock, and business courtesy of GiveDirectly. I, therefore, do not see any part that GiveDirecty needs to work on.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30000 of my second transfer on buying an acre of land. I have been yearning to own it for quite some time because the current one was a family land beside it was unproductive. On most days, I had to lease from friends at a costly fee. For most of the planting seasons, I couldn't afford to pay the required fee and I ended up getting not harvesting. These are some of the challenges I have been encountering but it feels like a relief to me. In addition to that, I cleared school free of KES 2500 for my son who is in primary school. He is now comfortably studying with fewer hiccups. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family of seven and household items like furniture, clothes, and utensils.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 am, I was in my house relaxing after traveling a long distance looking for water for my household. I heard 2 consecutive messages on my phone. I called my spouse to check my phone since I am unable to read. After checking he informed me that I had received my transfer. I felt very for receiving the transfer that would fulfill our dream of owning land.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently owning land after purchasing an acre with the help of my transfer. Initially, the place where we were living did not belong to us. We decided it was better to purchase our land to avoid any land conflict that might arise in the future as well as to have an investment for the family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 37,000 to purchase an acre of land that was costing KES 60,000 in total. The remaining amount I am planning to clear with my second transfer. This is because the place where we are living does not belong to us. We decided it was better to purchase our land to avoid any land conflict that might arise in the future as well as to have an investment for the family. I also used KES 4,000 to purchase a mattress for my 4 kids. They were spending their night on mats that were not comfortable they were constantly complaining of backaches after sleep. In addition, I spent KES 4700 to clear the fee arrears of my 5 children who are still in primary school. The remaining amount assisted me in purchasing nice clothes for every member of the family since we were wearing torn clothes which were embarrassing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means owning my own piece of land. I have been living on family land together with my family of nine. The extended family has expanded and this has rendered my family with only 2 acres of farmland whose productivity is not enough to sustain my family. Buying my own land means I will have enough food and in addition to this, my children will have something to inherit. I am planning to use 1000 dollars to buy 2 acres of land each valued at 500 dollars. Doing this will make me happy and at peace.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. This is because after spending the whole day burning charcoal, I use the evening hours to reunite with my family, have dinner together and take a rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is engaging myself in tiresome casual jobs. I have been doing charcoal burning over the past decade. This has made me unproductive whenever I engage myself in any other household tasks such as cooking, washing clothes or preparing my children to go to school.
