How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, I have a few goals in mind that I hope to accomplish. Firstly, I aim to install a fresh water tap at home. Currently, fetching water is quite a task as it is located far away. Having easy access to clean water would not only save time and effort but also promote better hygiene and health for my family. Additionally, I plan to continue investing in my goat farming, expanding it further to ensure a more stable source of income. With these steps, I aspire to create a more comfortable and secure future for myself and my loved ones.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly excels in providing a transparent and fair enrollment process. Unlike other organizations that often involve village elders or chiefs, GiveDirectly's process was free from political influence. This ensured that everyone had an equal opportunity to receive assistance, regardless of their connections or affiliations. While the financial help is valuable, additional resources or training programs could further empower recipients to build sustainable livelihoods and maximize the impact of the support received.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the roof of my house still unfinished from the first transfer, completing it became my top priority. I spent $200 on both the iron sheets and the labor charge, and now, I'm happy that my house is finally complete. It's a comforting feeling to have a secure place to sleep at night, knowing that I've made tangible progress in improving my living conditions. Additionally, I decided to invest in the future by purchasing a goat to add to my existing herd of 20. These goats serve as a form of security, providing stability and a potential source of income down the line. Moreover, I made sure to settle any outstanding food debts we had accumulated from a local shopkeeper. Maintaining trust and credibility within the community is essential, so I saw it as a wise decision to settle the bill promptly, reinforcing the positive relationship with the shopkeeper. Lastly, recognizing the strain on my son, who works as a casual laborer, I purchased food for the family to alleviate some of the burden on his shoulders. It's important to support each other within the family, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to assist him.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the farm with my daughter-in-law, doing some cultivation. As we were busy working on the farm while talking about how hard the economy has become and that life has become so unbearable, my phone buzzed, and there was the mobile money notification. I gave my daughter-in-law the phone to read the message for me since I could not read it. She then confirmed to me that GiveDirectly had sent me money. I was really happy because, on that day, we did not even know what we were going to eat in the evening because I had no money for food. We went home and told my husband about it and he was also grateful and happy. My first thought was just buying food for us to eat in the evening after a very long day on the farm. I went to the nearest market and bought enough food to fill our stomachs. We celebrated GiveDirectly with a very good meal and thanked God for hearing our prayers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The last several weeks have seen a lot of rain, so it feels amazing to be in a house free of leaks after I fixed the leaky roof. I don't have to worry about getting wet as I did previously. My family is happy now that we are sleeping in a warm, dry place away from the rain and the cold.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My house was in terrible shape; when it rained, we would get wet from the leaky roof. This was incredibly annoying, and I was never sure how I was going to resolve it. My spouse and daughter-in-law are unemployed and we share a home. So I fixed up my house with $500 of the transfer, so at least we'd have a good place to sleep. It felt like a dream come true to sleep in a warm place. We had no food in the house, so I spent the remainder of the transfer buying food.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
The nature of my current house is so pathetic and it puts a lot of risks into our lives. With the strong wind that we experience in our, my house is bombing and I never get peaceful sleep. Since I have my sick husband living in this house, it's put more worry on me. This has pushed me to desire to construct a decent house that will spare us from this danger. I intend to spend $550 of my money to ensure this housing problem is offset. This will guarantee me a happy life because I will be sure of our safety. On the other hand, I also intend to install fresh water in my home because I currently buy from my neighbor and this will settle the water problem at home. This project will cost me around $250. The remaining amount will help me to invest in livestock rearing which I plan to start with 5 goats. Hence, this is generally what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My life was complicated by the combination of financial instability and food insecurity. This made my life so tough with a lot of stress. Luckily, this year came with blessings. Despite having consecutive 3 years of failed seasons, we received heavy rains this year and we were able to harvest a lot from our farms. I got 4 sacks of 90 kilograms each. This has been so helpful in solving the hunger problem in my household. Currently, we have enough food at home, something that has enhanced the good relationship with my family. Hence, I consider the availability of food as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is what stands out to be my biggest challenge. This is because, apart from being a casual laborer in the mining sites of manganese, I am also involved in charcoal work as well as selling firewood. The income from all these activities combined is still hardly enough to cater to our needs at home. On average, I only make utmost $40 per month which I use to buy food. On the other hand, my 2 step-children who completed their A-level exams last year are yet to collect their results due to accumulated fee arrears of $1000. This has put more stress on me and I always feel pain watching them desperately at home. As a parent, this has robbed away my joy and hence, this is my source of stress.
