How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am hoping to purchase a piece of land that will be specifically for my children. I believe that this is the most valuable asset they can inherit from me once I acquire it. Also, they will be in a position to build their homes since we are now staying at my parents' compound after their father passed on.  Therefore, having this piece of land will mean a lot to my household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job by coming to our village and helping the poorest individuals. The idea of giving out unconditional cash transfers was the best since I had the privilege to choose what to purchase. Also, the enrolment was free, and no discrimination was observed. Therefore, I do not see the need to change their operating style as they move to the next village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $230 of my second transfer on paying school fees for my three children, one in high school and the other two in primary school, respectively. I received the cash in good time because their senior teacher had assured them they would be sent home if they failed to clear the balance. As a parent, I was so worried since I had no idea where I would get the needed cash. I have been trying up and down to even apply for loans and borrow money, but I was never granted. Therefore, seeing them back to school means a lot to me since they would still be at home. Also, I am certain that they are going to achieve their goals courtesy of GiveDirectly. To add to that, I bought new clothes and shoes for my kids since we were approaching the holiday season. It was indeed a unique celebration since they have never had a chance to put on new clothes or take plenty of meals on such occasions. Later on, I boosted my business (selling palm wine), and I am thankful that it has done so well. I can now take good care of my four children, whom I have been raising alone since the death of my spouse. With the remaining amount, I bought food and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was woken at around 4 pm by a friend who had come to check on me because I was not feeling well. While we were conversing, she received a message on her phone. She took no time to check since the phone was in her hands. Upon checking, she realized that she had received $550 from GiveDirectly. I was very curious since we were registered on the same day. I kept checking on my phone. By that time we had changed our conversation to matters relating to GiveDirectly. Around 7 minutes later I received a message too. I happily checked and luckily it was the transfer message as well. My heart was filled with joy and gratitude for the assistance I had received. Getting a such huge amount of money which you have not worked for and it is non-refundable was a miracle to me.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
As a woman selling local brew for survival was a big challenge for me. Men could come and drink then fail to pay and I could not do anything. They bullied me but since I had no way out, I just found myself pleading on their legs so that they could pay for what they had already consumed. Life was tougher for me. Thanks to GiveDirectly for the transfer. Through it, I managed to pay school fees for my children who were lamenting at home about not being able to continue with their studies. Their lamentation gave me sleepless nights but now I feel relieved since they are back to school because of GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being the breadwinner of my family since I am a single mother has been a struggle to make ends meet. I have three school-going children. One is in secondary school and the two are in primary school. Catering for their school fees has been a challenge since I relied on selling local brew and what I got from it could not sustain the family's basic needs. By the time I received the money, all my children were out of school for school fees. Therefore, I paid $220 in school fees for the secondary school child and $40 for the two primary school children. Managing to pay their school fees and take them back to school made me very happy. I was relieved from the stress of sourcing money for their education at the moment. Thereafter, I bought a goat for $40 to serve as a symbol of GiveDirectly at my home. For the remaining amount, I bought some food and saved the rest for the family's emergencies.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a single mother with a family of five members. I separated with my husband over ten years ago. I work as a casual laborer at one of the quaries at Jaribuni. I earn approximately KES 10000 per month. This money caters for only food in the family. My first daughter is in form three at Kachororoni secondary and the second daughter is supposed to join form one at Dungicha secondary school next week. Each of the two has a fee structure of KES 40000 per year. The one in form three has been surviving through bursaries though she has a balance of KES 5000 for the last year. I will use KES 110000 to pay school fees for my daughters and also donahopping for the one joining form one. The shopping will cost KES 25000. By clearing the school fees, will give a chance for my daughters to attend class throughout the year and also make them perform in their examinations. I am happy for Give Directly for their program.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last term on early April 2022, my daughter who is in form three got a bursary cheque of KES 10000. Through the bursary, she was able to do her end year examinations without destruction and she got B plain as her grade. The bursary brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Working as casual labor is a challenge because no job consistence. Sometimes I stay home for a month without going to work because we have shifts at our work. Looking at the needs of my family and staying home for a month because it is not my shift to work brings more stress for me. Lack of a permanent job to me is the challenge I am facing in life.
