How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Starting a poultry project has been my hope for a long time but never considered when I received the transfer since I had to address other pressing issues that needed more attention. Having completed all that I had enlisted, I now have this new goal that I am looking forward to raising some finances that will facilitate the purchase of construction materials to put up a nice chickens coop and later introduce chicken. I once had a small-scale one that would address almost all the household bills but the one in mind at the moment will be bigger and its proceeds will be in handy even in the payment of the school fees for my children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
It is everyone's feel that GiveDirectly did amazing work in every village they worked on. Sending us money directly to our accounts was the best idea given that everyone made decisions on spending. There was nothing ever that went contrary to our expectations as GiveDirectly was always clear in explanation and would deliver exactly on the promise and at the stated time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a whopping KES 40000 from my second transfer on a currently 6-months in-calf dairy cow that I am very excited to see it deliver in three months. Even though the prices were inflated at the time I bought it, I still feel I got the right breed that together with the preexisting dairy cow will produce enough milk both for my household use and also surplus for sale. The plan was to alternate their breeding seasons so that we can enjoy a continuous supply of milk in our household and cut the huge spending that I normally experience whenever they dry up. I spent KES 10000 out of the remaining amount on obtaining fencing poles, barbed wire, nails, and also paid the labor charged after the subdivision of my land to separate the grazing area and the crop farms. Feeding my livestock at the moment in a well-fenced area is easier and can at least give me ample time to do other farming activities while they peacefully graze in their paddocks. I later spent the remaining amount on obtaining foodstuff for my family of four.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on my way to the market going to open my business as it was my routine when I heard some people in their houses shouting and informing each other that they had received their transfers from GiveDirectly. Upon checking my phone and confirming the receipt, I became so happy and I felt like singing and shouting happily but had to restrain myself since I was on the road and I didn't want to attract any attention. Receiving such an amount that cannot be repaid made me happier and gave me hope that I would finally fulfill my goal of owning a dairy cow.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I used to spend KES 100 on milk daily and I am glad that this is no longer the case as I was able to buy a dairy cow using part of the transfer. Even though the milk we get from it is currently not enough for our consumption and sale, I am happy that I have been able to save KES 100 daily and I believe that I will be able to start other income-generating projects with time so that I will not be depending solely on my current business which is also booming after buying more stock using the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Buying milk has been my routine and I usually end up spending up to KES 3000 monthly on them. As a businesswoman whose business has not picked up well, getting such an amount to spend on milk alone has been a challenge, and my family at times has to take tea without milk. Upon receiving my transfer, I spent KES 35000 to buy a dairy cow as it will enable me to save the money I would have spent on milk when it calves and I am so happy about this. In addition, I spent KES 15000 to expand my business by buying more stock. I settled on this as it is my main source of income that enables me to meet our daily needs on time. Using the remaining KES 4700, I bought one sack of maize for our consumption.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means source of income for me. First, I have one cow that I was given by my father, the cow gives me 5 liter's a day and that means I have ksh 150 a day. My plan is to buy a Dairy cow Worth ksh 45,000 which can give me 10 liter's of milk a day hence by selling milk I'll make around ksh 500 a day and the income will meet my household demands. The remaining amount I'll add to my small business of selling cereals in kabuson center.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening because I have time to rest and reflect on my days duties and plan for the next day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints has been the biggest hardship. I am a widower and not having anyone to support me in the household, for me and my grandchild to get something to eat I have to work extra hard doing casual jobs. Have never had a chance to fulfill my needs since my savings are very little.
