How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next year and beyond, I am planning to start up a small business of kiosk, I will be constructing a small shop nearby my home. Shops and supermarkets are far away from my community and people walk far away to the shopping centres since they are located far away from us. I am therefore anticipating that it will attract as many clients as possible since it will be near them. Besides, I am also planning to do dairy farming so as to get milk for my family's consumption and for sale as well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
According to my opinion, what Give Directly does so well is that they give out unconditional transfers, different people have different needs, and we have the freedom how to spend the transfers so long as it is something that does not harm us together with community members.
The transfers are given in lump sum amounts and this helps in planning purposes in terms of the developments that we would wish to engage in at a personal level. Unlike other projects where it is given in small amounts.
To avoid household conflict, what needs to be done differently is enrolling all the individuals in the household. During enrollment, those individuals who did not have responsibilities by then were left out of the program yet these are the same people who steal from their old and vulnerable parents.
Another thing that needs to be done differently is enrolling all the communities in a specific village for uniformity purposes and this will prevent too many complaints coming from the communities that are left out during the registration to the programs
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before the transfers, I never had cows before as I had no stable source of income. I used the transfers to buy female cows for kshs 35,000. This is for milk production for my family's consumption and sale. I do casual work to earn a living and most of the time the pay is too little to cater for my basic needs, I do top it up with the money from selling milk and this has enabled me to take care of other basic needs like food, clothing and kids school fees.
I used the remaining part of the transfers of kshs 20,000 to buy a piece of three-seater furniture. I used to fear hosting friends and relatives as I never had enough seats for them, but my self-esteem has improved since I started receiving transfers from GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While still in bed on one of the fine mornings, I was wakened up by a message tone from my phone though I ignored it and continued sleeping. After waking up and starting my day's activities, I heard from a friend that they had received their cash. I hurriedly went into the house where I left my phone for confirmation and I found the money message on my phone. My heart was filled with happiness thus called my wife to inform her of the good news and we all celebrated.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, my living standard was not good; I relied on cutting and selling firewood for survival which was not a reliable job to sustain my family. As of now, I am happy because the shop business is doing well and I am grateful for that. Sincerely if it were not for GiveDirectly I would be still struggling in the bush cutting firewood for sale.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I used KES 20000.00 to buy a cow which was my long-time desire to have one. Thereafter, I used the KES 34000.00 to start a shop business where I sell fast-moving goods such as food items. I opted to start the business so that it could generate some income to sustain my family since I had no defined job.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Two of my children are yet to join secondary school due to financial constraints. I do not have material wealth to leave for them, therefore, I would like to educate them so that they can find meaningful work in the future. I desire for them to get out of this village and make something of themselves in the city.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Whenever I make sales, I feel so happy because that means my family will not sleep on empty stomachs. I am very grateful.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
From my charcoal selling business, I can only afford KES 500 per bag. I do not burn more than three bags a week. Most times, I do not have money even to feed my family. What is more heartbreaking is the reality of how bad things keep getting economically.
