How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The cash transfers have brought a positive change in my life in various ways. First, I am a proud owner of goats which I am currently keeping in my compound. In the few days to come, I am positive that they will reproduce and increase in number within a short period of time since they reproduce twice a year. will be able to sell the matured offsprings in case of any financial difficulty or emergency. Secondly, I am now sleeping comfortably in a wooded bed and getting sweet dreams, Unlki before whereby I used to sleep on the traditional beds which I was not comfortable with and I always complained of some back pains. Finally, through the transfers, I managed to purchase a piece of land and I will now be saving the money that I have been using in leasing other people's land. Also, this assures me of getting lots of harvests.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in so many ways in my village. One the fact the money was non-refundable and unconditional was the best part of all. We were all given the opportunity to choose how best we could utilize the transfers according to our heart desires. Also, the GiveDirectly officers were so approachable and we were free to ask them any question that we needed clarification and they were there for us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on paying school fees for my children who are in both secondary and primary schools. This has really been stressing me for quite a long time because they have always been sent home for fees frequently. I later bought some livestock such as gats that will serve as the living assets that I can rely on in case of any financial constraints. Also, I settled a debt of KES 15000 to a colleague. With the remaining amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 8 am when I was at the farm together with my children then my mobile phone started ringing. Since I am illiterate one if my sons decide to check, only to realize it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy and we even decided to go back home and to celebrate.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have been in a marriage for so many years and I have never had the joy of sleeping comfortable bed for all that long. I have been using some old mats as bedding without even mattress neither sheets. I was always attacked by some pests ie mice and also been complaining of severe back pains which were as a result of the state of the beddings. Therefore this was really affecting me and sometimes I could not perform the house chores and even fell sick. However, the coming of GiveDirectly into my life has transformed everything because I a now sleeping comfortably in aq wooded bed and decent mattress. I have been having some sweet dreams of late and I no longer complain about the back pains. And this makes the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a piece of land at KES 30000. I have been longing to own it for long since mine was very small and I had to lease from friends every planting season which was quite expensive. I also bought some new clothes for my children because the old ones were torn. Also, I bought some bedding which includes a new bed and a mattress to replace the old beddings that I have been using. With the remaing amount of money, I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Subsistence farming is my main source of livelihood but it is not so sufficient due to unproductive lands. I till 5 acres of land every year but the much I get is 5 bags of maize. This food lasts us for only two months since we are are a family of 6. This means I have to purchase food for the rest of the year. My biggest desire is to achieve food security for my family. Therefore, receiving this money means I will purchase a more productive piece of land for the aforementioned purpose.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon after tiresome morning hours of farm work. I always thank God for his protection and granting me life to continue with my daily duties.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a widow, I have the responsibility of raising my 5 children single handedly. This means I have to go beyond my means and I burn charcoal to make a living. The much I get is around 3000 shillings a month, an amount that is supposed to cater for all our needs. This has resulted to constant suffering and getting food and school fees is such a struggle. Due to this, I consider financial constraint as my biggest hardship.
