How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The long-term goal is to provide my son a life that is as far away as possible from what I have been able to provide for him. See him graduate from high school and become someone. While on that journey, I found a way to start a wholesale business. Selling cooking oil, cereals, dry foods, and other household utilities would ensure we have a good income to make the lives of our kids better.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly excels at being a blessing. There's no other way to put it. They are truly a blessing. They have come into the lives of myself and my community and completely impacted our lives, positively, to a degree we would never have, in our wildest dreams, imagined. They excel at being agents of change and are above reproach in my eyes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband has long worked as a mason, despite us not having built our own home. The funds from GiveDirectly were then quickly funneled towards construction of a three bedroom house ,complete with verandah. It is more than sufficient for a still-growing family such as ours. It currently consists of our 3 year, 6 month old son, myself and my husband. While my husband earns $25 per day from his toils, it isn't nearly enough to sustain us, seeing as I don't work myself. As a result, I purchased a male and female cow for breeding as well as five local breed chickens, to supplement what I grow for domestic use on our five acres of land. My main crops are Maize, cassava, and local cereals are primarily what I grow. Without GiveDirectly stepping in, we would have been living one day at a time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While grazing my goats in the field, a friend of mine came with the good news of the GiveDirectly transfers. She told me to check on my phone if I would have received the money because she had received hers. I was a bit reluctant to leave for the home where I had left my phone and I thanked her for the information but I stayed in the field looking at my goats. At around 11 am when I reached home, I checked and it was true, the transfer message from GiveDirectly was waiting for me. My heart was filled with joy and happiness for receiving the amount knowing that I would do some of the things that I could not due to lack of money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am very grateful to GiveDirectly for the unconditional transfer they made to me. The money enabled me to see my longtime desire coming to fulfillment. For years, I had desired to start a shop business that would serve my family as an income-generating activity but due to a lack of enough capital, it did not work. This is until when GiveDirectly came into my life. For sure the organization empowered me and uplifted me to a higher level in life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I constructed a three bed-roomed house. I did this because the house I had was very old and in a bad state to live in. two rooms were for my family while one room was for a shop. I had desired to start a business that in return would have some income for my family. Concerning that, I used KES 25000.00 to build the house. I planned to start the shop business with a capital of KES 35000.00; therefore I added some amount from my savings and started the shop.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a decent house for my family. My current house is leaking during the rainy season and this situation is embarrassing for me. I plan to spend KES 80000 to construct a spacious three-bedroom house with an iron sheet roof that will accommodate my family comfortably. I will use the remaining amount to start a kiosk that will act as an extra source of income for my household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the Month of January, my brother-in-law blessed me with 24 kilograms of maize flour. This brought joy to my life because the stock lasts for two and a half weeks and I was able to save my money from my charcoal business for other household needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a charcoal burner, a very tiresome and time-consuming job yet its income is as little as KES 2000 per month. This amount can not fully support the needs of the family. Consequently, we skip meals or borrow from relatives something that never gives me peace since I usually feel ashamed. Therefore, I consider lack of a reliable source of income as the current challenge that I am facing.
