How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I was able to pay school fees for my children in secondary and college on time. I used to do casual jobs and small scale farming to earn income to support my family. The amount of money that I get through this was so small and could not meet all the basic needs including paying school fees for my children. My children used to be sent home to collect the school fees and this was affecting their performance. At some point I started small business of groceries. I used to sell vegetables, fruits and onions. This business was good because there was demand for vegetable in town. I was in a position to pay part of the school fees and buy food for my family. When I received the second transfer it really boosted me. I paid all the school fees for my children for that particular term and it motivated me to work harder at home. I no longer do the casual jobs, I have devoted much of my time in doing horticulture farming. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled me to pay school fees on time and to start horticulture farming.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy dairy cows. I did not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend part of the money I received from GiveDirectly to buy a heifer. I will be in a position to get milk for my family when it reproduce in the next few months. This has been always my wish to own a dairy cow. I also paid school fees for my children in secondary and college. My children were able to study well without being sent home to collect the school fees and this led to improving their grades. I bought furniture which I didn't had before for the house that I renovated and finally food for the family. We didn't had enough food in store when I received the second transfer. I found it wise to buy food and store some. GiveDirectly has change our living standard.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The moment I received a notification to my phone, I was curious to know it's content and to my shock, on it was KES 55000 credited to my mobile money account. I was so happy that I haven't received such a huge amount before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Now I am living a better life that we have enough food to sustain is for some months. I would struggle with daily casual jobs which at times I missed and this would force us to go without food. Again, I have some furniture in our house which has offered the comfort that wasn't there before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My recent transfers which I received from GiveDirectly, I first spent KES 20000 on clearance of school fees for the whole year for my two children who are in high school. I then spent another KES 13000 on buying an heifer for rearing. At that time we had little food remaining and I spent KES 16000 on buying four sacks of maize for consumption. The remaining amount of KES 6000, I spent on buying some furniture and clothes.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a lot to me. I will be able to take my children through their current stages of education as I think of what I can do to help them further their education even in future. I am a single mother and have two children who are in college and secondary school respectively. Paying school fees has been one of my greatest challenge but I am hopeful that the money will be of great relief to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is at noon when I have finished my days chores and had lunch for the day. It is so fulfilling and reassuring to say the least.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I have faced is payment of school fees. It has always been my desire to see my children do well in school but with limited resources at my disposal, I have not been able to give them the best. There are times that they have been sent home for school fees but I thank God that they are where they are now.
