How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to invest more in livestock specifically goats. This is because goats can survive without water for a longer time compared to cows. Goats also have a ready market and they can be easily converted into monetary value since they are not expensive like cows. Through this investment, I will be able to cater to my children's education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did perfectly well in their operation. The staff served us well without segregation nor looking down upon us even at the lowest points. They politely handled us and gave everyone a chance to express themselves. They made sure no recipient or potential recipient is dissatisfied. I adore how the organization handle things and the courtesy was of very high quality.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, the first thing I did was take my son to the hospital. For a while, he had been complaining about his lower abdomen only to realize he had some infection after the doctors examined him. He received good treatment which cost KES 7000.00 and I am glad he is doing well. Thereafter, I started a charcoal-selling business with a capital of KES 10000.00. I chose this business because it has quick money since most people have turned to use charcoals after the prices of paraffin and cooking gas accelerated. Since I have two children who are in primary school, I opted to pay their school fees for the whole year amounting to KES 9000.00 so that they concentrate on their studies. I also bought three goats for KES 10000.00 to add on the ones I had to boost the investment. For the remaining amount, I saved it for family use.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7:30 in the morning when I was heading to my daily hustle( burning and selling charcoal) when my phone started ringing continuously. Due to my curiosity, I had to check who it was. I was so happy to learn that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I could not afford to work on that particular day and I had to go back home and shared the news with my family. This would remain to be a memorable day in our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have a specious semi-permanent house. Previously, I used to sleep under a temporary hut which I was worried would collapse anytime. Apart from that, I never had the chance of sleeping under one roof with my four children. As a single mother, who relies on low-paying businesses, the much I could earn in a day ( KES 100) could only be for my family's food. Therefore life has been so tough and times being hopeless. All my children were still young and needed my support the most. I have however been praying to God to at least bless me with the little cash so that I can at least renovate the house because we would soon be left homeless. I am so happy that my prayers were finally answered and I received a huge amount of money from GiveDirectly that u could not even expect. The fact that I managed to fulfill my dream has restored my joy and hope in life. As a family, we are all thankful, and may God continue to bless them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials such as iron sheets, and building poles at a total cost of KES 21000. Later on, I gave the mason KES 10000 as the labor charge. I had intended to construct a new house considering the previous one was very small to accommodate my family which is comprised of four. In addition to this, I bought a bed and mattress at KES 11000. Initially, I used to sleep on the floor with the old mats and it has been a tough experience. On most days, I could wake up with lots of pains and backaches. Also, I cleared school fees of KES 10000 for my two children who are in primary schools. They are studying peacefully without any interference. With the remaining amount of money, have been buying food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a small house where I stay with my three children without a door. Receiving this money means comfort to me, I intend to build a semi-permanent two-roomed house for 30,000 KES. This can bring back honor which I had lost because I share the same single room with my children. I am unable to change clothes when they are present. I have been sleeping in sacks and old clothes all my lifetime, I intend to buy a bed and mattress which can give me peaceful naps. This can amount to 15,000 KES with the remaining amount I will open a small kiosk in my village town to curb all customers at home.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have 3 children, my first two children are female. In my culture, we value the boy child because we are sure of continuous lineage. Two weeks ago I gave birth to a baby boy, this brought joy to my life. I had always yearned to give birth to a baby boy, this was an answer to prayers in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints are the challenges I am currently facing. Getting just one packet of maize flour has always been difficult for me, I have to burn charcoal and carry it to the nearby market 10 kilometers away from home to sell them. Sometimes I do not get customers and I have to come home empty-handed. I feel pessimistic after the long struggle to get food every day. I wish I had gone to school, this could not have happened to my life.
