How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, I am buying building materials in bits with an aim of building a more spacious house. This is because the house I currently live in is small and I cannot start a family with it. Having a more spacious house is also advantageous especially when one has visitors as one will not have to worry about their accommodation. In addition to this, I am aiming at owning a cow one day. I am planning to make some baby steps towards achieving this goal. First, I am planning to expand my poultry project. Once I have many chicken, I can sell some and use the money to purchase a goat or two. I will in turn rear the goats until they will have increased in number and later use the proceeds that I will get from selling them to purchase a cow. With this, I'll be getting milk for our consumption and for sale.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Poultry farming has been my dream since it's easy to manage and less tasking. Aside from this, one can decide to start with any amount that he has. With my most recent transfer, I spent $34 in the purchase of six hens as a way of starting my poultry project. It's my hope that they will increase in number very soon to an extend that it will be generating income on daily basis. In addition, I spent $34 on the purchase of 6 pieces of iron sheets, spent $20 on my grooming by purchasing some clothes and a pair of shoes and saved $14 that I am planning to use in case of an emergency. I have a plan of building a more spacious house since the one I currently have is very small. Due to this, I decided to be buying the building materials in bits so that I cannot feel its weight and also, getting a huge sum of money at a go is not easy as I do not have any source of income.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current house is too small, and I am eager to begin the construction of a larger one. I plan to gradually save up and purchase one metal sheet at a time for this project. This will simplify my work and make me have an easy time in planning and buying things that I do not have.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used to sleep on the floor, but after receiving my transfers, I invested $30 in a comfortable bed, improving my living situation. With the remaining $4, I purchased clothes and shoes for myself, making positive changes in my life. Life was unbearable but thanks to GiveDirectly, I can now easily afford my basic needs.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My dream has been to improve the condition of my house. I hate seeing it in that pathetic condition because that subjects me to extreme cold during rainy seasons. My bedding is often rained on, hence I have no option but to either stay awake or use wet bedding when it rains at night. Since I have acquired four iron sheets, I shall work to buy more. Consequently, that will help me in improving my living standard. In addition to accomplishing this, I hope to begin raising goats and hens through poultry farming. These are valuable live assets that will help my family post-transfer periods.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My house has been in a pathetic condition. Its iron roof is rusty and weak. When there are heavy winds, I am always afraid it collapse. In addition, during rainy seasons, it leaks, and I often have to look for a safe corner. It disrupts my sleep when it rains at night. When I received my recent transfer, I was contemplating how I would renovate my current house. I, therefore, spent $7 to buy four iron sheets, so I only have the four against twelve that can comfortably be sufficient to renovate the roof. That will make it better and safer. The remaining transfer of $6 helped me to acquire food for our family of five members. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for its financial aid.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have always desired to be in a position to rear livestock and have my own business, but due to to financial difficulties, I had never been privileged to do so, so in the near future, I plans to buy livestock(goats) and chicken so that I could rear them at home and be able to sell whenever I would be in need of finances. I also want to start a green groceries business, and with the business proceeds, I would be in a position to cater for my needs with ease. I will ensure that I subject my monthly transfers to buying one item at a time so that after a certain period of time, I would have everything in place.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
For the longest time, I have not been sleeping in a comfortable place, I have been using sacks and spending my night on the floor. So with my most recent transfers of KES.3470, I saw it was a relief to me since I managed to spent it all on buying bed and a mattress, I have experienced a great change and I feel so happy because currently, I have a comfortable place to sleep on .

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly, in my opinion, does well in the giving of unconditional cash transfers and doing direct visitation of prospective recipients. It is essential for promoting the community's members' well-being. Additionally, it does regular follow-ups are carried out effectively to understand the impact of the transfers on the community. I am hoping to get a new bed and mattress because I know it will improve my life. However, I have not seen what GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Because I do not have a job and I hardly earn some money from my casual jobs, I have been living in extremely difficult conditions. I have been sleeping on a mat on the floor because I have never bought a bed or mattress. When I received my transfer, I saved the whole of it to accumulate cash for buying a bed and mattress. I do not know how long I need to do those savings. However, what drives me to prioritize these items is the pain I experience whenever I spend on the floor. Using a mat and sacks as bedding is a painful experience and so uncomfortable. Many times I always wake feeling not only tired but also in back pain. I am hopeful that I will be relieved from that painful experiences soon.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On this particular day I was resting in my bed at noon time, when I heard a message notification from my phone. I hurriedly reached out to my phone to check it out. I could not hold back my joy when it dawned on me that GiveDirectly had just sent me cash via the Mpesa message. Not even thinking twice I dashed into the nearest Mpesa agent where I made some withdrawals after which I went to the shop and bought some clothes and shoes. This saved me a lot of frustration of always begging for support from my father. Thank you GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily since I started receiving money from GiveDirectly is the joy of being able to afford good clothes and shoes. Being of age and lacking wearing torn shoes and clothes has been embarrassing. Atleast I did not have to push my father who is financially weighed down to give me money for the said purpose .Thanks so much GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Having no stable jobs and missing out on job opportunities as well has broken my heart and left me at the mercies of my father for financial upkeep despite him struggling to make ends meet. He has been selling hand made toothbrush in order to raise our family of six. Due to this set back, I could not realize any self growth considering that even my clothes and shoes had been worn out. However, when I received my first transfer all things changed for better because I bought decent clothes and shoes. I am glad that my living standard changed I could afford a broad a smile. Thank GiveDirectly for the financial support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will help me achieve financial independence. At my age, depending on my parents makes me feel very uncomfortable. My plan therefore is to invest in goat and chicken rearing. I sit idle at home most of the time and this means that I am capable of overseeing this projects very well. A goat costs 3,000 KES while one chicken costs 500 KES. I will be buying more and more as I receive the transfers every month. In future when I get money from the sale of the livestock, I will repair my house, buy clothes and purchase a bed and a mattress.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Life has been very difficult the last six months. The only thing that I can be happy about is the good health that I have had. I have not visited any health facility due to illness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Due to financial challenges, we are living a very deplorable condition as a family. I cannot afford to buy personal effects such as clothes or even soap. I sleep on the floor and getting food is really a struggle. I dropped out of school due to lack of school fees hence securing employment is hard. I just sit jobless at home.
