How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a new goal which is to start a business selling vegetables in my village. Currently, I do not have any relive source of income that I can count on and this has been affecting my entire household. My spouse is the family breadwinner and relies on a very low income. I hope that once I will get the capital to start the business, we will no longer have to strain on meeting the family's basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been doing a great job in the entire village. First, being asked to choose what to buy after getting the cash was the best. This made me accomplish my dreams and I am grateful for that. Also, there was no discrimination at all and that was cutting across the whole region. I, therefore, do not see any part that GiveDirectly failed us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a piece of land (half an acre) at KES 10000 which I have been paying in installments. I had to settle for it because I have an idea of constructing rental stalls in the future once I get the cash. I later bought three goats at KES 10500. I am happy that at least I have valuable assets that I can rely on at any time. Additionally, I cleared fees arrears of KES 5000 for my six children in primary schools. Also, I bought a new bed and a mattress for a total of KES 12000. Previously, I used to sleep on traditional beds and old mats which I was not comfortable with. With the remaining amount of money, I bought food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 4:30 PM when I was just relaxing when my mobile started ringing very loudly. This was so strange because it was very rare for me to receive a message at that particular time of the hour. Therefore I decided to check out where the message was from. I couldn't believe my eyes, it was an Mpesa message that was from GiveDirectly. I had at long last received my first cash transfers. I felt so happy and I remember having to call my spouse who had gone to visit his sick friend. This was one of the joyful days in our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that the transfers have empowered me to send all my children to school. They have been staying home for a while which was a result of the accumulated fees. I have been dreaming of seeing them get a better education but in vain because of my financial status. Being a housewife of six children, my spouse had to pick up all the household responsibilities. He however did not have a stable job which could mean, the little he earned could only be for the daily meals. Seeing my children crying every morning for not having the opportunity to go to school was the worst part of it. It has been demoralizing them to an extent some had opted to drop out of school and engage themselves in casual jobs. I was so worried that my children will be the laughing stock in the village. I am so grateful that the money came in good time and they are all in school. This is an assurance that their future shall be bright.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a piece of land (half an acre) at KES 35000. I had intended to construct a business house which has been my plan for years. I have been jobless and I felt this would be the best investment which will not only be a job opportunity for me but also uplift my family's living standards. To add to that, I paid school fees for my six children a total of KES 4000. I am now at peace because they have been staying home because of the huge arrears. I later bought a new bed at KES which was basically to replace the old one that I was using for all that long. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family and other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was employed as a shopkeeper before I was married. I believe I have the potential skills to run my own retail shop. I have been thinking of how I could utilize my skills and experience acquired when I was running the retail shop business but now I have got an answer for my dreams. Receiving this money means I will start my own business of retail shop and selling green vegetables . I will stock my shop with fast moving goods which are commonly used in my area and also purchase green vegetables from Galana ranch and sell then in my shop. I believe I will make alot of profit from my business and change my family's life. I am a mother of 8 children but they are still at lower primary school and I believe by the time they reach their secondary school, I will be stable financially.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I got a relief food of rice and beans at our town area donated by the area politicians. I got 10 kilograms of rice and 3 kilograms of beans. It brought joy and happiness to my family because my children enjoyed it very much. They had not eaten the same food since last year Christmas festival.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity in my house is a bigger challenge in my house. My children goes to school without taking break fast and walk barefoot on the scotching sun ! I am not stable financially, I depend on casual labour which are very hard to find especially this time after covid 19 no one is ready to build a house and therefore I have changed into cutting trees for charcoal burning business but still finding a customer to buy the charcoal is also a havoc.
